    tank left fishless....keep it cycled??

Mini-cycles typically aren't too damaging to fish unless you're trying to house highly-sensitive species. I think you'll be okay with the prawn method if you just dose with ammonia one week prior to adding fish. As for the "knowing" what bioload the tank can take by using ammonia... that just...

    Dead ram, baby platies

My female and male ram never bonded, but they seemed to tolerate each other pretty well; he'd push, she'd push back, no real problems. But yesterday I didn't see her when I was feeding / watching the tank. She was hiding from the male who had become quite vicious in his pushing, so I removed her...

    Cardinal Tetras

They're just hard fish to acclimate. Very sensitive at first, but once established they are very hardy. Just try acclimating them slower to your water.

Oscar dying, bloody eye, slit in lip help!!!!

The ick medicine was probably a bad idea, but the salt was not and you could actually add several more tablespoons to help him out. As for his recovery... I don't think it likely. Give him a week and see how's he doing then. If he's worsened or if his condition drops rapidly I would have to...

LFS Gave Mystery Clam After Cherry Shrimp Died, need help with ID (pics)

Clams are hard to care for. It needs to be in a place with high water circulation so it can feed off particulates in the water. Lots of clams starve to death and sit in tanks for weeks before being discovered dead. If it's by itself in a tank or with fish too big to eat small foods, I'd throw in...

    Does the weather

Take a page from the marine people and elevate your lights 4-6" above your water. Leaves room to let a fan blow across the surface.

Nano heavily planted tank /w high lighting

Well, after college I'm going to hop right into a 180gal or 200gal that will also have CO2, so I think just getting a canister now will be best in the long run. But I'll try excel for a bit, I have two bottles of it left. Thanks guys. Edit: I don't suppose a salamder or newt would...

Nano heavily planted tank /w high lighting

I have some excel and flourish, but I'll probably buy a gallon of it before I go up. Anything else I'd need besides the liquid ferts? I'd like to do pressurized, but I've heard it's very unstable in a small tank. Without fish what ate the dangers of over dosing the CO2?

    Point to ponder

So we should release Royal Plecs into the overgrown water ways? ;) Good point though.

Nano heavily planted tank /w high lighting

Okay, so college isn't that far off and I've been trying to figure out what I can do in terms of pets / aquaculture in the dorm room. So far I've thought of: - Nano reef - Fire bellied newts / paddle tailed newts vivarium - Other amphibian vivarium - Nano heavily planted tank And I'm...

    Do fish drink?

Air has a higher concentration of O2 than water, but they may not necessicarily be "drinking" air, they might be eating something on the surface and making an air bubble with their mouth on accident. What kind of fish is doing it? My bettas and gourami do this all the time.

    Overstocking Question (Agressive Fish)

The fish will be kept in species (genus) only tanks. The JD's and Jags may intermingle, but I know that the birchirs will not do well with agression from the large cichlids.

    Tour de France

I watch it when I eat breakfast, otherwise no staked interest. Just a neat sport to watch though. I hope Lance gets it again so he can win on a high note.

Rant about miskept fish that are "doing fine"

That's becasue they don't have them. Pets make for smarter, better, and happier people. Edit: haha, Now I've one and dug up a post because I didn' notice it was two weeks old. :p
