How mcuh can I stock after cycle complete?

and doing it properly being the key words here. Agree with TwoTankAmin – if you are doing fishless cycling correctly, you can fully stock your tank. The amount of ammonia you add in a fishless cycle is generally more than is produced in a fully stocked tank – within reason, of course...

    Tank protection from algae

Along with the other suggestions, there’s opaque ceiling panels for fluorescent light fixtures. Trouble is you have to buy a whole sheet (2x4 feet or something like that) for a little piece. They are nice and thin and would fit between your bulb and the glass protection of your tank – but they...

    Cleaning a Rena

Canister hoses (and inside the spray bar) get biofilm build-up that flakes off. It has nothing to do with mechanical filtration. Every few months I clean mine.

    Cleaning a Rena

The spray bars have the 2 little square clips that clicked onto the next piece. You have to lift them up simultaneously and pull the spray bar off. I have found it easier to pry one up with a very small screwdriver and just pull at the other clip with my fingertip (one hand holding one piece...

    Java Fern and Coconut Shell

I have java fern on a coconut (not the narrow leaf though), but the tank lights are off right now. Let me hunt my full tank pics and see if I can isolate it big enough or else I'll try to remember to get a picture tomorrow. edit.... ok well here it is, but you can't really make out the...

    small, thin, white worm/parasite??

Just for reference. Planaria crawl on surfaces, nematodes wiggle in the water column: the "S" pattern webcricket describes.

Lamest Gift Received from a Secret Santa Exchange

I wish someone would give me mannequin hands. Although a whole mannequin would be better. One year in a gift draw (where you either pick a new one or 'steal' opened gifts) we ended up with liqueur chocolates where one of the chocolates in the box wasn't filled with liqueur but filled with...

Cleaning filter media w/ treated tap water

I clean my filter & media (sponges) in treated tap water all the time. Old tank water has little to no nitrifying bacteria, it's firmly attached to objects. If treated tap water affected your bio filter, we'd have die off every time we did a water change, some of us do 50%.

Bugs on the surface- what are they?

Do you have a magnifying glass or something - to catch one and look at it more closely, i.e. if it has legs? Far as I know cladoceran, like your daphnia, etc. are only in water. On the surface, I don't know, water mites or springtails, perhaps?

    ick problem

Yes, I've just used regular table salt. Much cheaper; also easier to get at any store rather than making a trip to a fish/pet store. 33 oz box aquarium salt (Big Al's price) - Canadian $4.99 1 kg box (= 35.27 oz) Windsor table salt - Canadian $1.49

How to humanely euthanize a fish?

You don't add the fish to straight clove oil. You put a bit of clove oil in some tank water in a bag or container with a lid and shake your arm off because it really is hard to mix in, but it needs to be mixed well with the water and not just sitting on top. Then you put your fish in. The...

    Anybody have duckweed?

Or, get salvinia natans. It's like large duckweed (each leaf 1/4 inch). It grows as fast as duckweed, has long fuzzy roots which look kinda nice hanging down, and then if you want to get rid of it, it's easy because of its size.

    Java moss, how to use?

Yup, that's what I did with the coconut. Tried eating the innards, too. Yuck. I guess I'm used to processed. But the shells are almost like rock to cut - got my husband to do that, cutting out a little hut door.
