That seems to be the norm at most places.... They get more sales that way.... fish die...you buy more.... tests are all screwy so they sell you additives to fix it.... ect...ect.

Dont worry about the nitrates now.... low nitrates is a good thing too. Just take care of the ammonia and nitrites mainly now....when these two get to 0ppm then you can work on getting the nitrate levels good.

:iagree: Keep up with water changes to get ammonia and nitrites under .25ppm ...this might mean you will be having to do 2-3 water changes a day depending on the test results. This is the main reason I went with a fishless cycle....no water changes to do...just tests.

When I drain my tank I run my Python out the door close to my tank....seems to get better suction for vacuuming the gravel...plus no water waste using the faucet water to supply the suction. I have a bucket just for rinsing my filter cartridges in... when I start draining the tank I just fill...

What are your ammonia and nitrite readings? Being that you are cycling with fish the small water changes you are doing may not be enough.... You should test the water (hopefully with a liquid test kit) and do water changes that will get ammonia and nitrite levels at or below .25ppm. Plus...
