I got my ammonia at Ace Hardware..."Janitorial Stregth Formula" ...It comes in a gallon jug and was with the cleaning products.....A gallon will basically last you forever as with your tank it will probably only take 2-3 drops to get you at a 4-5ppm range to start a fishless cycle.

There are several choices you have...sand,gravel and several soil type substrates...just do alittle searching on here and you can find all the info about each one so you can take your pick.

Yeah you have some cleaning to do...try using regular vinager to get alot of the scum off the glass,hood and filter...should clean up pretty nice with alittle work. You can soak the gravel in some water with just a very little bit of bleach to kill off any algae if you plan on reusing it...just...

I dont think you are suppose to use air stones on planted tanks as it breaks surface tension of the water and let the avaliable Co2 escape faster...Co2 is what plants need. Plus air stones are really just a thing for looks anyway....they dont do anything really other than maybe help add...

Here is a pic of my planted 10g...also a pic of the screw in cfl bulbs I have...Lights are 10w Daylight 6500k bulbs I got in a pack of 2 at Walmart for $6..You could probably get some 13w ones to fit ..I went with the 10w because I was afraid the bulb might be a tight fit and hit the hood but...

What kind of lighting do you have over the tank now? The kind and amount of light you have on the tank will determine alot on what kind of plants you can have better luck with. What kind of substrate (gravel,sand or other) ? Also what fish are currently in the tank? Some of these questions...

Nice tank...I like the layout but not real fond of the background... I think it would look better with a black background . It would look like the second pic with the room lights off all the time. Kinda makes everything stand out better against the black.

If Petco wont take it back check with a local fish store as they may give you instore credit to use toward something else. I have a 1 Dwarf Gourami and 8 Neon Tetras in my 10g...

If there is any crowning of the boards be sure to put the crown up....so it will settle straight with weight applied.

Bought mine at Walmart garden center...like you said though it is kinda a bad time of year to find it...... But it was cheap $3-4 for a 50# bag. Just be sure to wash it real good as most of this is intended for outside use and is still fairly dirty. Also you might look at the gravel real good...

Looks like it should work fine to me..... Only thing I might change is to make the shelves one continuous piece instead two half length ones.....this should make it abit more stable from side to side. One 8' sheet of plywood could be used and cut to size to get your two 6' long shelves

Here is what I would do.....take and wad it up and throw it in the garbage.... Then go buy a can of Krylon black spraypaint....mask off around the edges and then spray it with 3-4 coats until you cant see any light spots when you look at it ...then call it done and enjoy your new gourgous black...

As long as you have pairs they are going to spawn.... It is in their nature to do so. Only suggestions I have are to either get tanks setup just for each pair... put 2 males or 2 females together ,but then you will have aggression over territory..... or not have a pair and take one of each...

Just noticed the tanks in your signature are bow fronts.....links wont do you any good. You may have to get some custom cut to account for the bow front.
