    Bioballs vs Straws

The point of them is to give benifical bateria a place to grow and thrive that remains undisturbed. Conventional filter floss in HOB filters holds alot of bateria, but when you change the floss, you lose the bacteria. The "objects" placed in the flow of filtered water(inline) give the bacteria...

Lets just sum up gravel options

Hmmmm I'm going to guess that you're looking for a cheap substrate, right? If you wanted the cheapest, I would use a mix of Aquatic Soil(from Home Depot/similar), and pea gravel, put over top of a thin layer of peat. The aquatic soil is like $6 a bag, and the pea gravel is about the same...

What Would PETA Say to This?

The culling of the deer population is good. Especially where I live. Iowa. Most of our money comes from one sort of agriculture. Anybody who says that we should not hunt nor cull deer have never seen what an out of control herd can do to a corn field. I have personally seen corn fields that...

What Would PETA Say to This?

Maybe PETA should go and preach to bears, sharks, and lions. They all eat meat, and kill rather inhumanely too. There was a demonstration at a Kosher meat packing plant 8 miles from where I live. They didn't like the way that "Kosher" meat is slaughtered. What do they think? 3,000 years...

    How do fish sleep?

Well, just to see, and possibly start an argument, I just tried looking at my fish in my 29 gal. tank. I first used the red filter on my light. I moved it around my school of harlequins, and they didn't bat an eye. Just kinda stayed in the same spot. My ghost shrimp, tried to get out of the...

Did I get the right light-bulb?

The Zoo Med Flora sun bulbs are an 8500 K bulb. Which will work fine for plants. The reason for the purpleness, as it says on drs. foster & smith is that the bulb has peak colors in blue and red. Combine the two and you get purple!

    How do fish sleep?

Actually, the red light thing is with everything. You see it, but it doen't aggrevate your night vision. Anybody in the military who is infantry knows this. You are required to have a red lens in your flash light. 2 reasons. First, the actual light doesn't travel as far as other colors...

10g tank and low CO2 ppm

I'm using the same bubble ladder on my 29 gal., and my co2 is noramally around 15-20 ppm, and I have a Whisper 20-40 HOB filter. I would think that with a 10 gal. tank, that amount should be easily attainable. How often does it form a bubble? Oh yea, I run my bubble ladder with 2 2L soda...

    Miracle Grow?

What is the PH/KH of the tank. That will tell you what youre getting for Co2. As far as plant supplies, if your lazy like me, and have a piece of plastic in your wallet, buy online ferts for your plants. Otherwise, you could mix your own, which I may try(On a new tank that I'm setting up, no...

    aquarium stand for 40g

Most bathroom type vanities and such are built with 1"x2" or 2"x2". While some may say that that would suffice, I wouldn't trust it. My 20 Long stand is being built with 2"x4" construction grade pine(covered w/ 1/2" sanded plywood, and trimmed w/ white oak). Probably heavier than it needs to...

Anything wrong with Jebo PC lighting?

I agree that the Jebo fixture is worth the money. I have measured the surface temp. of the housing w/ a infrared thermometer, and the highest it has been was 105 F. I am thinking of getting a small fan from radio shack and seeing if I cant get it in there. There looks to be plenty of room...

    New Tank....

Why can't you keep angel fish in hard water? I have had one in my 55 for a little over a year now. The hardness/PH of the water mostly can matter very little to most fish, as long as they have been acclimated to the water. My angle btw is in water that has a hardness of 290 PPM, KH 230 PPM...

    What Plant Would Work?

I am starting a new tank, a 20 Long, as a planted shrimp tank. I am going to try some new things with this tank, and one of them is a "living background". I am going to attach(somehow) a 1/2" piece of cork to the back of the tank. What plants would form a thick carpet, and attach themselves...

    DIY 3-10gal Bowface.. pic

I think this is what he meant(or something like it) Water Bridge This is the first one that I found. Just to give you an idea. My friend had something similar to it on a tank that he had a long time ago. It takes a while before the fish get used to going above the surface of the water...

    Rena XP2 or Fluval 304

I think that rena updated the spraybar at some point. Some of them have this problem, others don't. Either that, or mine was made on a monday, wednesday, or friday; bad days for production, the worst days for an employee to be at work!

    Rena XP2 or Fluval 304

If you decide to get a filstar, make sure to get some drill bits to make the holes in the spray bar bigger if you use it. I had to drill mine(the holes in the spray bar) like 4 sizes larger to get rid of the "whoooooooooing". Other than that, I love it!

    Filter for Shrimp Tank

Mostly Red cherry, some ghost shrimp, and definately a couple of wood shrimp. I'm also going to try to see what else my LFS can get(those are all my LFS normally stocks). I dunno bout the fish yet. Maybe later I will add some little fish(once I get a bigger shrimp population), I am also going...

    Filter for Shrimp Tank

I kinda thought that a sponge filter would be better. I am also planning on planting this tank, and wouldn't a sponge filter drive off c02? I guess I could still grow low light plants, but, I guess I could also grow algea for the shrimp to eat. I was thinking of adding some small...

Fish better at fish only stores or Petco/Petsmart etc?

Just like the others, the only way to know is to go there and look. Believe it or not, up until 6 months ago, a local wal-mart(no, that is not a typo) was the best place around to buy fish. It was not the only place with fish, but they hired and older gentelmen and his only job was to take...
