You could use a water conditioner to removie the ammonia from your tapwater, e.g. Amquel+ or Prime.

I've heard that bettas sometimes eat snails.

Also, test the new water you are adding--if it has ammonia or nitrite (like my tap water does) you may need to use a different water conditioner that neutralizes these (e.g. Amquel+, Prime), otherwise your daily water changes might not be bringing down the ammonia and nitrite levels in your tank.

Breeding bettas is complicated, if you really want to do it you need to do a lot of research and make sure you have tanks ready for all the hundreds of babies. It's not something to undertake just because your male built a bubblenest so that it won't go to waste.

I think even if it had a coating it might be hard to clean algae out of all the nooks and crannies. It's hard enough with stuff that is designed for use in the aquarium.

Test the nitrite level of the new water you are adding. I had a similar problem, it turned out my tap water contained nitrites and the water conditioner I was using didn't remove all of them.

Kasakato, I think asd159263 was talking about tiles made from the kind of rock called marble, not the little glass balls called marble. As well as worrying about the marble dissolving, I would wonder if it was suitable for the friendly bacteria to grow on. It would also be harder to have plants.

Last night my landlord brought me another betta to rescue. He looks outwardly normal (though smaller than my other betta), but today he has stringy light yellow poop hanging off him. I haven't got him to eat yet. He's spending most of his time hiding. What kind of treatment should I be...

Unfortunately, I don't know what this is. My betta is having what sounds like the same problem, so I'm bumping this thread to the top. Hopefully someone out there has some answers? A friend of mine thought that my betta might have been injured, so I'm treating with Melafix. I'll let you know...

Thanks, Emg. He's looking perkier, constipation seems to have passed and he isn't hiding so much, but he still has this lump or lesion on the other side (which he won't let me photograph, of course). I'm feeding small meals so he won't get constipated again, and treating with Melafix.
