    List of very small fish?

Pygmy sunfish are in the 1" range (females get slightly over 1").

    Native Tank?

Looking good! I've got five native tanks going, and I'm about to set up a sixth. They're addicting!

    nano-vivarium thoughts?

That's pretty sweet! As far as planting, I think it would look nice with a moss- and selaginella-heavy scheme with some red-leaved ludwigia down low and maybe a small fern or bromeliad as the centerpiece. As long as you have no animals there is no need for filtration.

might be able to trade our 65G for a used 150G

Sounds like a great deal to me! Have you built a big stand before? It's not too difficult, you just have to pay attention to how the weight is being transmitted (e.g. make sure the tank's weight is always directly supported by wood, not by fasteners).

    fw shrimpy thingie?

Your friend lives in Texas too, right? There are some big catadromous Macrobrachium shrimp down there that are clear when they're small. When full grown they are enormous, and definitely a threat to fish. Do a Google search for "Macrobrachium carcinus". I believe that's the common species in TX.

    breeding feeders - suggestions?

I suggest shrimp as a supplement to whichever livebearer you choose; ghosts or red cherries should work well.

    is this stuff... algae?

I believe you've got the fungus Saprolegnia with some kind of algae growing on it. The fungus will only grow on the wood and will clear up on its own eventually (may take a few weeks). You can remove it if you like; it won't make much difference in the time it takes to go away. But don't try...

Starting a half and half build tonight, Questions about inhabitiants and other stuff

I agree, and will add that you should probably stick with snails as your algae eaters; otos need an older tank, and anything else is too big for an eight gallon habitat or is incompatible with your other stock.

    potted plants

The lumps of jelly are clutches of eggs; each white spot is an embryo. If they are pond snails, they will probably stay about 1/2" long, though some species get a little bigger. They are good at cleaning up leftover fish food. They will eat algae, but are not dedicated algae eaters like...

    Buying a big tank???

Glasscages.com and other tank builders deliver, but delivery ain't cheap. The pet stores you visit can have the tank you want delivered with their next shipment; this may be a cheaper option for you.

how do I sanitize my nets, etc

I do some aquatic sampling for work; we use a 1:1 solution of Chlorox and water to disinfect equipment between sites. Soak the net in the bleach solution for a minute or two, then allow to air dry. The bleach will evaporate out. You don't need much solution; just mix a little in a plastic...

How can i best remove golden shiners?

I had the same issue recently, and ended up using Rinmouse's suggestion (but I needed to drain the tank anyways). Is your tank big enough to hold a minnow trap? That usually does the trick.

Shrimp ID please :) Pics within

The orange bands on the claws are characteristic of Palaemonetes paludosus, the common ghost shrimp of the Atlantic slope. It may be ill, but it could also just have a mutation that makes its flesh that color.

H2O2 Algae treatment - effect on inverts?

In my experience H2O2 has no effect on inverts in the kind of dose you would use in an aquarium. It breaks down quite quickly in the presence of light- just a few minutes. There is no residue.

Sounds like my Mom's cat- she likes to trot back and forth in front of the dog pen, just to drive the dogs nuts.

Just curious, Lupin- do you keep your snails and loaches in separate rooms, or do the snails just have to live with the loaches staring at them and licking their chops?

Hah! Well, feel free to ask me any specific names you have issues with. I'm sure there's lots of stuff I didn't include there because it didn't occur to me.

    Limestone?

As said, the effect on your water depends on your current water conditions; very soft or acidic water will be strongly affected, while moderately hard, neutral or basic water will be less affected. It also depends on the limestone. For example, Indiana limestone is much less soluble than...

Pronunciation and useage of scientific names

Finally, my Latin classes will pay off! OK, this is gonna get a little confusing. There's Classical Latin, and there's Ecclesiastical Latin; pronunciations are a bit different in the two, and most modern users of Latin learned one or the other, so there'll be some disagreement there. Then...

    paludariums bottoms?

Eggcrate (lighting diffuser) will be in the lighting department at any home improvement store. I second using GE I; besides being cheaper, it also comes in black and is a little less viscous than standard aquarium sealant, so it goes on smoother. Be sure to get the 'Windows and Doors'...
