Creating Stock Fert Solutions - Can Someone Check my Math?

I'm a rather broke college student. 1lb of ferts for $3 beats $20 or whatever it is for a bottle of Seachem :thm: I have access to balances and dH2O as well, so that makes the process easier.

Creating Stock Fert Solutions - Can Someone Check my Math?

I'm going to be purchasing dry ferts and putting together stock solutions to make my life easier. My goal here was to figure out how many drops of a specific solution I needed to add to my tank so that it equaled the dosing suggested by EI. This is for my 15 gallon. I'm going off of these...

    Planting Glosso

I should probably have read your entire post lol. If you can, avoid buying it in the pot. It's such a pain to pull it apart if it comes in rock wool with all the roots wrapped around the plastic pot. Before you buy anything from a distributor, though, I would suggest you look around on this...

    Planting Glosso

you want to break it up. don't leave the rock wool on it. depending on how ambitious you are you should break it up into 2-3 leaflets and then plant all your little stems/leaflets in some type of grid pattern so you get even growth. going to be planting glosso in a few days as well. good luck...

DIY Lighting - Incompetant Person Here Needs Some Help

The light strip and the hood are two separate pieces. I want to discard the plastic part (the part with the little door) and just use the strip, but I need a way to mount it to the tank. I could use one of those versa lids but I don't think that's going to solve my issue of being able to...

DIY Lighting - Incompetant Person Here Needs Some Help

I haven't had the best luck with DIY so far, largely because I never know what I'm looking for and trips to the hardware store end up with me just wasting gas. So hopefully somebody here can point me in the right direction :) I have a 15 gallon tank (24" long) with one of those AGA hoods and an...

    Substrate options

why are you switching substrates? if you don't want to switch to something like Ecocomplete I don't know how big of a benefit you'll see from going from sand to something inert like SMS. SMS is probably marginally better but not worth the effort imho. unless, of course, you just plain don't like...

Switching Substrates - Will Fish Be OK?

Well I'm definitely going to take the fish out during the transition. I have a 6 gallon tank I can put them all in for a few hours. It's the couple of weeks after I change the substrate that I'm worried about. I can't house all the fish I have in a 6 gallon for a couple weeks, so they have to go...

15 Gallon Rescape Thread (Pictures too)

I decided to try and play around with some configurations. The container I was using isn't as long as my tank, though, so I did it in pieces. The distance from the front to the back of the container is 12" like my tank though. Here's what I was thinking: Left side: As I said, around the...

15 Gallon Rescape Thread (Pictures too)

I was trying to think of something like that. Maybe instead of having that big piece in the middle put it off to the corner and drape the two skinnier pieces across the center. Then in whichever corner the big piece is not I'll put all of the anubias. Not sure if that'll work / fit / look...

    plant problem

hmm. well, you said you just started the CO2 a week ago? was the algae there already? have you seen more algae growing since the CO2 was started or is it just the stuff that was there before you started the CO2?

15 Gallon Rescape Thread (Pictures too)

So I'm doing a semi-rescape of my 15 gallon low light tank. I'm going to be changing the substrate to ADA Aquasoil, and I'm going to try and grow some glosso. I figure, though, since I'm going to be taking the tank apart I might as well consider some different scaping options. So here is what it...

    plant problem

without a consistent CO2 source adding ferts is going to cause you issues I think. do you have a drop checker or any other way to figure out what your CO2 levels are?

Switching Substrates - Will Fish Be OK?

I'm switching my current substrate (Schultz Aquatic Soil) to ADA Aquasoil. I'm worried, though, about my fish. There of course is the issue that I'll be removing a large amount of my biological filtration. Also, I've heard that Aquasoil has the tendency to have ammonia spikes during the first...

    plant problem

you probably have too much light. I've heard the excel isn't good for vals. you may want to try a DIY system if you can't afford a pressurized system. You can also decrease your lighting by either only using 1 of the bulbs or having the lights on for less time. I know 55w over a 29g doesn't...
