I look forward to seeing the pics! I don't know about Alocasia as a houseplant; maybe if you kept the soil very moist.

The Pilea is nice. I didn't see a specific size listed for that Alocasia. The text says it's 'small', but since most Alocasia are quite large (often three feet or taller) that doesn't mean much. And since it's got basal leaves, you can't train it to a smaller size like you can with a bushy...

How about red-veined prayer plant (Maranta leuconeura erythroneura) for the taller plant? They don't like to be repotted, so just bury the pot. Should do well in a moist, low-light setup. For the smaller, maybe Ruby Earthstar (Cryptanthus bivittatus Ruby). Earthstars don't like super wet soil...

Either of those should do the trick. They are both varieties of S. kraussiana, which is, I believe, a South African species, with a low, sheet-moss-like habit. I prefer the solid green varieties to these yellowish ones, but that's just me.

    Should I go for Arowana?

There are other long, silvery, big-mouthed predators if it's mainly the arowana "look" you are interested in. Have you considered the violet/ dragon goby? It's somewhat arowana-like in form but is a more manageable size. You'll need to salt the water a bit. Alternatively, it is possible...

There are a lot of Selaginella species, and they have different growth habits. Some form mossy carpets, others are more erect and fern-like. Do you remember which species or varieties you were looking at? I have not actually grown Selaginella in a terrarium setting, but the species I have...

    Flourish Excel IS Glutaraldehyde

I saw no accusations made or even doubts expressed, just a perfectly reasonable request for corroboration of a statement. This is a friendly discussion and it should stay that way. I have nothing of substance to add but am interested in seeing what new information crops up here. Cheers!

    Identify this fish?

It is a gar, but neither Florida nor alligator. It is the longnose gar, Lepisosteus osseus. They are the second largest gar and can reach six feet in length.

    New goldfish tank questions

The goldies will outgrow the 37. The usual rule-of-thumb is 30 gallons for one fancy goldfish, 20 more for each additional goldie. A 75 gallon would be ideal for your three goldfish and a school of white clouds. The goldies will be fine in the 37 for the time being, though, and that filter...

This is why not all snakes are bad snakes.

Cool pics! BTW, that's a Texas Indigo Snake, not a king.

    Baby snails crawling on Saggitaria

Those are names for a specific pond snail, Physa acuta. I believe the OP's snails may actually be a Physella species, but I'm not sure. Great shots, by the way!

OK, since I am here and onto "controversial" subjects ...

Urea is certainly less toxic than straight ammonia (which is why we mammals convert our ammonia to urea in the first place), so I can't see it being an issue unless you are adding enough to see a big ammonia spike. Fun fact: Urea was the first organic compound to be successfully synthesized...

    20 Gallon High Ideas?

Some of the small climbing geckos, such as Hemidactylus, could also work.

You could say that. My tank had no animals in it, so I wasn't worried about ammonia spikes.

    20 Gallon High Ideas?

Have you kept frogs before? Dart frogs can be demanding. There are some good resources at www.dendroboard.com for dart frog care. If you are a beginner to frogs, gray or green treefrogs are a better first choice. They are hardy and adaptable. You could keep a pair or trio of either in that...

Check out www.blackjungle.com. Lots of plants and caresheets. I think a creeping ficus or Philodendron scandens would work for your vine. I would go with mosses or Selaginella for the groundcover. I don't think you'll find any caladiums that will do well in that tank, but you can probably...

    axolotl and fish?

Pam- The axolotl and tiger salamander are related species. There are neotenic populations of tigers in the southwest; you may have been sold one of these instead of a true axolotl. Axolotls can also transform, but less readily. Austin- I haven't kept axolotls, but I have kept sirens and...

    Sunfish going into main tank?!

Looks like a bluegill. I've never had problems getting sunnies to eat prepared foods. They are curious fish and will try to eat anything. He should be all right in the 55 short term; those temps are a little on the warm side, but not too high for him. These guys grow fast. They switch to a...

    chinese tank

Good points, Lupin. I believe regulations on channids are still state-by-state, but I did not notice the OP lived in Maryland, where all channids are banned. It is my understanding that Parabotia species sometimes enter the US as 'stowaways' in shipments of other loaches. Also, while G...
