New tank - never raised plants before...

...at least successfully for the long term. My friend gave me a fully planted tank with an algae eater 10 neons, a rose minnow a corry and a redtail shark (brown). I put a heater in it and gradually filled it with water - it had been half emptied for the moving. At first I left the light on...

Cleaning a 70 full of algae

Thanks! I will look more closely. My hope is to put it in the living room and cover the back with black paper.

Cleaning a 70 full of algae

If the water is suitable, I will probably put a plecostamus in - will keep that one - but don't mind if I have to trade out others once the tank is mostly clean. I eventually want to put cichlids in it,

Cleaning a 70 full of algae

I just rented an apartment with a patio. The patio has a (I guess) a 70 gallon aquarium that is full of water and algae. I am wondering - trying to make life easier - can I buy some kind of hardy aquatic animal to eat the algae before I do the hand cleaning? maybe some kind of snails? I am...

    Mini-aquarium

Plastic...but very sturdy looking plastic. I will wash one out tonight and fill it with water to see...but I have no doubts about it being able to hold the water.

    Mini-aquarium

It might be easier to put a round bottle under the aquarium, let some water drain into that and purify it there...oxygenate it also...so only 2 holes in the bottle, then pump it back into the bottle.

    Mini-aquarium

I bought carmelcorn this year in a big bottle - looks like a beer bottle. It holds about 2.5 gallons, is 28" tall and about 10" wide at the base. I think it would make an interesting aquarium for a small species - cherry shrimp, etc. I plan on painting the back 40% of it black, to avoid back...

    Learning How To Breed...

Thanks! My immediate goal is simply to learn how to efficiently breed fish. They will be used in my apartment as pets. In a couple of years, when I leave China, I will be raising them for food.

    Learning How To Breed...

In a couple of years I hope to start breeding and raising Tilapia on my little farm. I am not in a position now or next year to deal with such a large fish - I will be an apartment dweller. Is there another member of the cichlid family that similar breeding habits that I can practice on/with...

Learning how to raise tilapia and sardines

Thank you! But in Beijing, there are no fresh tilapia for sale...so I was wondering if I learned how to breed and raise some other kind of similar cichlid, if that would give the skills that I need? I want to find something to practice on.

Learning how to raise tilapia and sardines

While most people seem bent on traveling to foreign countries, my dream of retirement has always been to have a small homestead-ish type of farm. That is half a dozen years away for me but I would like to start learning how to breed and raise tilapia, sardines and shrimp for the purpose of...

    Stocking a 60 gallon planted

Thanks! I appreciate the input. RE: the size of the tank, it is sitting on a wall in my house, where the opening was cut out for the balcony. It is 90 cm long - that is fixed by the size of the wall that is available...I can add a little bit and make it 50 cm deep....tall is the easiest to...

    Stocking a 60 gallon planted

Thanks! I meant a black ghost knife fish. Visually very interesting, and, AFAIK, very peaceful fish.

How to begin a planted aquarium

Thank you! That is very, very helpful. Combining your advice with the answer on another post, it seems wise to first stock the tank with small fish, then after it settles, consider upgrading to larger fish?

    Automatic feeders

Does anyone use an automatic feeder all of the time, even when you are home, to maintain a consistent quantity of food that is fed to the fish?

An app to stock a tank

Has anyone found an app to help stock a tank - keeping the ph requirements for a fish, softness of water, temperature, etc?

How to begin a planted aquarium

I am sure there are good, well developed threads on this, including links to other pages. What I am looking for: what order do you put the plants in - back to front, according to growth rates, etc? Should I fill the aquarium to the top in the beginning? When to put fish in? Also, is it...

    Stocking a 60 gallon planted

I have the place to put it...now I'm gonna do it! It has been 20 years since I have had a decent sized aquarium - have only had 5-10 gallons in the recent past. I want to have a planted tank (including CO2) but don't want to put small fish in it, i.e. the tetras, etc. My list so far: an...

    Plants as a filter?

Maybe of interest to you, Shedd's Aquarium in Chicago had an aquarium biotope (is that the right word?) set up with a river, land trees, fish, I think even frogs or turtles...the fascinating thing is that it was (almost) completely self sustaining...but still at times needed some intervention...

Keeping the bottom of tall plants healthy

A few years ago, I took my plunge in plants with a small aquarium. I put anacharis in the back of a 14" tall tank and was pretty successful with it without CO2, extra lighting, etc. The tank had minimal lighting, a short yellow fluorescent bulb. The only problem that I had is that the leaves...
