Go easy for starters son. You will be dropping $$$$ like water itself when your fish die. And believe me...they will die. It happens to everyone and its best to learn with cheaper more managable fish so that you know what to do with future more demanding species.
Just make sure you take your reading when the water is clear...and has been mixed for at least 1/2 an hour.
I use the Istant Ocean 200g mix bucket with one of the mixing pumps. A stingy 2 cups of salt usualy yeilds 1.025 (which is where I run mine)
Drop the mixing powerhead in and just go...

There is a dark colored slug-looking invert crawling on my glass. It looks black and greyish with small white tenticles, almost like spines that it appears to move with. It is worm-shaped and VERY slow moving.

That brown algae is/are diatoms. Normal for all tanks and good sign of cycling.
THose magnetic glass wipers work great for cleaning the inside and as suggested above, cleaners will keep it "clean".
