    JD in 55g tank?

Tank should be fine, but the airstones are unnecessary unless you like the wall of bubbles. The hob should be enough circulation and maybe you can add one once the fish gets bigger to keep his water clean.

    Hello, newbie with a question

Yep, sounds like you're well on your way. If you can find a bottle of bioculture, that would speed things along. Id give another week or so and start adding some hardy fish after a water change.

Question for those that raise their own feeders

I always used gambusia as feeders, and I don't recall any unusual smell. What kind of feeders do you use?

    Black hair algae

Buy some excel and apply the dose directly to the algae with a syringe or eye dropper. It'll turn red, white and then die and get filtered out. Alternatively, mollies and guppies will eat it, as long as they aren't getting other food. True Siamese algae eaters and farowella cats will also...

    Corys and convicts

When those cons pair up, there will be blood. I'd probably get the corys out asap. Breeding cons tend to be terrible roommates to anyone in the tank.

need to buy new heater -- help with which one

Buy a Marineland Stealth. They come with a life time warranty, so if something goes wrong, they replace for free.

WTF!!!!! where the hell did these snails come from....

Why did you shut it off? Don't worry about the snails, if they're really a problem, get an assassin snail and they'll "magically" disappear

Moving a planted tank from one house to another

Only big issue I had was when I filled it back up. The flourite was disturbed and I had some cloudiness, but I'd blame carelessness more than anything else. Plant-wise, everything went well.

    Questions for my 2g tank

You could also use one of the many 27 watt "full spectrum" desk lamps available. Then you can grow just about any of them.

Will riccia grow attached to anything?

Riccia definitely will not attach by itself. A good way to attach it is to get a shower scrunchy and some plastic zip ties. Put some riccia on a rock, wrap it with a square of scrunchy (cut some squares) and pull it all together underneath. Secure that with the zip tie and you're good to go...

    Brown stuff on moss

It might also be dying. Thats the color of dead moss for sure.

Can you tell me whats wrong?

If you're keeping your water column packed with ferts, you should definitely do big water changes each week to reset the amounts. Look up the "estimative index." That should give you some guidelines. You might also need to increase your CO2, which might help with the algae. The shot gun...

    feeding goldfish fry help

The above recommendations will work, I'd add that New Life Spectrum makes a really good "Grow" food with .5mm pellets for fry. Its a really high quality pellet too. I would say that once they are a decent size, expect to cull some of them. You'll have to do nature's job since you are their...

Moving a planted tank from one house to another

Don't pull everything. Drain the tank down as low as possible. Put wet newspaper or papertowels in the tank to keep everything damp and you're good to go. I've moved three times, once was about a four hour drive and then overnight before I added water and everything made it fine. Rotala, some...

    New Cichlids!!!

The parrots might push the angels around a bit. The angels definitely don't belong in a tank with buffalo cichlids. One comes from slow moving wooded pools of acidic water in South America, the other from fast moving, rocky streams in Africa. I guess they won't die in the same tank together...

Determining Sex on Dwarf Cichlids? Bolivian Ram

On the males, the vent tube tends to be smaller and pointier, the dorsal and anal fins are pointed. The females' vent tube is rounder and the fins are more rounded on the ends. The vent is easier to see than the fins, as some males have more rounded fins than others.

    Peaceful, Colorful Dwarf Cichlids

+1 for getting rid of the knife, shark and I would say also the eel. Not only are you overstocked, but you are under-equipped to responsibly keep fish of that size unless you have a big tank for them to move to. Once they're gone, you could keep a pair of rams, apistorammas, and kribs. Also...

    New tankmate ideas for Geophagus

Most stores take fish as trade ins, depending on the fish. At the store I work at, we give 1/4 the price we can sell it for. The bigger the fish, the better the trade in value. Best case is call and ask.

    2 Cichlid IDs

They're red zebras. The first one is a different color morph, I forget the proper term for it, but not albino. Maybe just stressed out, but not albino.
