120 Gallon Mexico River Riparium

here is one of the beautiful goodeids that i observed during one of my trips to Mexico, Allodontichthys zonistius.

this fish acts like a darter, staying at the bottom and scooting about. it has a very pretty copper-brown coloration with violet accents.

Wow I haven't been back to this thread in a long time. I haven't been able to put much time into this setup for the past few months. I did re-plant it and I have just been waiting for some of the stuff to grow to size before trying to better resolve the look of the planting. Here is a quick shot from tonight.

The underwater area is a mess. The rocks are all just piled in a heap and the manzanita branches are laying on their sides in a second heap. The plants are looking good though. I did have a theme in mind while replanting...

  1. a carpet of aquatic stems trained to grow across trellis rafts.
  2. Acorus gramineus (sweetflag) in several planters as erect, grassy background plants
  3. semi-woody flowering bushes (e.g., Ruellia brittoniana, Ludwigia sp. Hibiscus) trained to grow into midground.
It will take a while for this to grow in right and look pretty good again.
 
Thanks. I think that a waterfall might look a bit contrived with this setup. The filter return does make nice little concentric ripples in the water that look nice.
 
hey hydrophyte, just curious... do you inject co2 (in the water or around the terrestrial plants like hydroponics)

Nope. The plants get all the CO2 they need from the air.
 
Very nice tank my "cuate", I really like this set up. I used to collect those wild guppys and endlers and who knows what else,when I was a child in the rivers of my state. I miss those days. Again really nice tank, even tho you think is a "mess". hehehe I wish I could have a messy tank like yours.
