150 Gallon Build Thread ... From the Start

roadracr, welcome to the forums? I know cf appreciates the extra feedback. Great looking setip BTW.

Question for you actually (sorry to hijack the thread). I noticed you have the exact same moonlights as I do and have screwed them onto the top of the canopy. Doesn't your canopy lighting interfere with the downlights? Its hard to tell from your photo but I'm really curious as I would up velcroing mine to the versa-tops instead.

Cf, the extra tubing should not interfere significantly with flow but I don't have any real experience with Eheims. I only know that it would be negligible if you went with the FX5, but suspect it will be a non-issue either way. A vertical drop is always preferred though.

Thanks for the feedback Vader - glad to see you back! It's getting better all the time. Just came from the LFS - they had the 150 tall with an oak stand and canopy. Looks sweeeeet but the cherry looks even better!!

Glasscages.com have some cool tank sizes - but their stands just don't look like the cherry Mission Series you have. Also, I am nowhere near their delivery zone - would have to pay direct shipping (likely to be an arm and a leg)!

It just seems like such a waste after p***ing away a gazillion on the rest of the setup to have to settle for cheap, regular black gravel (lol)! Well, you have to do what you have to do (lol)!!!!

buy flourite black and mix it with the black gravel
Theres no need to get fancy with the gravel.. in the end its the same thing.. Just the fancy shmancy gravel will give the plants an extra kick at the start.. after that the regular gravel can be just as good.

You want fancy go for Aquasoil lol

Nice cf! Really great to see you're amost ready to pull the trigger :D

I think you'll be better than fine with regular black gravel as Bk mentions, but I gotta say that to my eye, the flourite I used just looks better. The exception is if you find black gravel that is smaller than pea-sized. I like having a finer more sand-like substrate so less detris penetrates to the depths of the substrate. Considering the investment this tank represents, I would'nt cut corners now. Order your ideal from DFS if thats what it takes....

What exactly makes up your substrate Vader??

I was thinking about going with a layer of flourite, then eco complete, topped with a thin layer of fine black gravel (the LFS does have that - just wouldn't want to buy 150 pounds of it - lol)!

As I've said several times, I was not as 'learned' nor did I do this much advance research when I set my first tank up (the 125). My learning curve for aquarium keeping has actually been very steep and basically begins when I joined the forums. I envy the amount of research you're doing here.... the only way to go :headbang2:

I have a 50% mix of Seachem Onyx and Black Flourite. I purchased them solely because I thought they would look good together LOL. I really like the Flourite, which is completely inert and does not affect water chemistry. The Onyx looks great, but has some buffering capacity and will raise your KH. This can have significant effects on a pressurized CO2 system... just something to keep in mind.

I think a mix of flourite and small diameter black gravel would be great.
