Thanks 12 Volt - what would you go with? Black flourite and Estes 'black special' gravel?
BTW - I really appreciate you researching / finding that thread!!

no downside.. the downside you will experience is with shipping 6-8 bags of flourite to your door..Question: Is there any advantage / disadvantage to going with entirely black flourite as the substrate - besides the obvious additional cost downside?
sold by weight not by volume? could that play a role here..Question: With the Flourite Black (over the standard Flourite), the Iron and Potassium are way down and the Aluminum and Calcium are both way up (everything else is close to the same) ... will this make a difference in the end result?
nope.. you will be dosing NPK + Traces so what ever plants dont get from substrate they get from water..
Also, according to the calculator on Seachem's website, it takes more bags of black than regular flourite - wonder why?
The Flourite Black is actually a little grayish black. The flourite black sand is more black. Comments?? Feedback??
better yet after you get the tank.. go to the store and get a small bag of the black gravel.. throw it in the corner of the tank and see how it looks..
Good idea - but it takes about 2 and 1/2 weeks to get it washed (lol). Hoping to have the substrate ready when the tank arrived. But with this project dropping a little sample carpet swatch in the corner first is a pretty good idea.
BTW - Drs. Foster and Smith will ship at 21.99 a bag (either black or sand) for 18.00 total. I found another place that would ship at 23.00 a bag for 10 bucks total.
2-2.5 weeks to wash?? few rinses with lukewarm water will be just fine for the flourite or black gravel. All you want to do is remove some of the dust particles...
