are u planning on putting more plants in it?

The combination of the river-stones & dark driftwood piles with white silica sand base make for a very cool and natural look. In addition that theme with your selection of large non-cichlid species makes for a refreshing and different look. I really like it.

Thanks Gunner

Yeah, but I have to get new bulbs for the lights first. The few baby java ferns I took from my planted tank are surviving...barely. The roots aren't latching onto the wood yet. I've had to reattach a couple of the plants as, I beleive, the loaches are pulling them off at night. Would like to get a few taller plants for the back, but not sure what to get. Need something to do OK with <1 wpg.

So, decided my planted tank needed some prunning today. Clipped 5 nice sections of java fern and transplanted them to this tank. All had 2 - 4, 6+" leaves; all but one had nice long root system. Hopefully they will take, this was my first attempt taking cuttings.

I took some pics, but have to get 'em of the camera...

cool lets see some pics
I agree we need more pics.

Ask and you shall receive...

Water has a bit of haze to it 'cause I ended up removing the driftwood to attach the java. A couple of the pices are laying horizontal in the current. I think once the roots take hold they'll go more verticle.

Never transplanted clippings before, so any advice on getting these to take is welcome. And, yes, I need to upgrade my bulbs soon.

As an aside, my planted tank looks a bit better now, so I'm happy I did some yard work. Even if these don't take in the new tank.

Clippings in a 13"x9" baking pan. The black stuff intertwined in the roots is gravel from my other tank. Didn't get it all out as I wanted to preserve as much of the root as possible. Besides, a little extra weight should help them stay put too.

165G update

So, it's been a while. Had some more progress on the tank - and a few misadventures - over the last few months.

I've settled on a clown loach and rainbowfish community with a few others thrown in the mix and I've been slowly building the stock. Haven't done anything more with the plants since the January posts. Java Fern is barely hanging in there, but the lighting is soon to be upgraded. Have some algae and diatoms on the back of the tank and a touch on some of the rocks, but nothing that won't soon be food.

Stock:
7 clown loach
4 rainbow bosemani
4 emerald rainbow
4 turqoise rainbow (currently in QT)
3 bala sharks (1 large, 2 juvinile)
6 scissortail rasbora
3 bristlenose pleco (currently in QT)
2 ottos
1 zebra danio

Filtration: 2 Rena XP3. Funny story...I just set up the second XP3 on Sat. Before that I had an old AC110 (running with the first XP3) that I used to cycle the tank. I had intentions to set up the second filter but kept putting it off. Come down to check on the tank one morning and found about 15 gallons of water on the floor after the filter media became clogged. Dumb luck that I caught it when I did. A rug sopped most of it up and I was able to clean up the rest before it got into the floor. Rug dried out after a couple days in the sun. No harm, no foul - though the wife rolled her eyes, a lot. Time to set up the second filter.

Lighting is still crap...I think the Mrs. is getting me and upgrade as a b-day gift.

Heater was upgraded recently as well. The heater that came with the tank just wasn't consistent. I replaced that with a 300W stealth to go with the 200W stealth I already had.

Guess that's about it. Feedback is welcome.
