230 Tank Build

i dont normally go into the marine diy area, but i should now! thats frickin awesome!!! (note-this is the first time ive seen this thread lol). when i get my 20 gallon tall iam gunna make a stand.

Thanks Sarge. It has been a labor of love. And, sometimes Hate. :wall:

the gasket should be inside the tank, and the nut part should be outside...
and for your question about PVC cement, yes regular cement will work.
if you dont like the smell, and all that purple primer , there is a product called "gorilla" PVC cement, which claims to be stronger than the pipe itself... it dries white, and has a much cleaner appearance.... i just used it to plumb my 225, but i wont get to fill it to check for leaks till tomorrow...if youd like an update on my opinions of the glue when im done, id be glad to give ya a review...so far, the nicest thing ive noticed about it, is that there is no smell, and its only one step, wich makes it much more easy to use..

Thanks 7faces - Yes - please keep me updated. I bought the standard pvc cement, but perhaps I'll make a quick run to Home Depot and pick-up the Gorilla stuff. If it safes me a step, it is already worth the extra trip and cost.

This project is getting cool again. That is, now that I am working on it again. Coincidence? I think not.

Well, the tank is full again for a freshwater test, and so far, neither type of cement has leaked. So with that aside, ill give ya the pros and cons to both and you can decide...

Gorilla PVC cement: Cons:
1) I cant find it locally...(mine came with some plumbing i ordered online, and i was getting low on it and could'nt find it)
2)You have to hold the joint together for 60 seconds (according to the directions) to stop pipe push-out.... a couple of mine still pushed out well after 60 seconds

Pros:
1) One step...self priming
2) Alsot less messy
3) No smell
4) Dries white ((blends in better than that pright purple)

Regular PVC cement: Cons:
1) Stinks..bad solvent smell
2) the primer is runny, and gets on everything
3) Looks bad if you get the primer on the visible pipe, or hands, or floor...etc..

Pro's:
1)easily available...anywhere...
2)bonds quicker...directions call for holding the joint for 30 seconds..(I had pipe pushout with this too, well after a full 60 seconds, but it seems a bit less frequent with this type)

If i think of anything else, ill edit later..

Not sure if you ahve gotten that far already, but wanted to suggest using 'invisible hinge'. I used them when I built my canopy, and they have been extremely sturdy and completely invisible when closed. You can buy them at any Rockler store or from the catalog, here is a link:

http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=272&filter=invisible hinge

They actually carry a black finished one, though I do not see it on the site. The brass one is likely to rust.

I have a 75g and needed 4, just for reference

I have some hinges which are similar in design. If they do not serve my functional and aesthetic needs I'll certainly give these a go. Thanks for the link.

Thanks 7faces: I appreciate the comparison contrast report. :grinyes:

Yikes - couldn't find it at my local Home Depot!

Thanks Again for the information. I would like to use the Gorilla cement if I can find it.
