Because I have been told by a very well known killi breeder. Not some one who has had them for a week.
Cichlids and bettas are not peaceful tankmates. Also yes they see fish in the wild and that fish is usually trying to eat them. Why not try to set up an ideal environment foe these fish? Something that is stress free.
I just don't think recommending killi fish to a beginner wanting to set up a community tank is a very good idea. They ar very pretty fish but most have specialized needs and care.
