29g LED Lighting system build thread

you know cory... I am currently working on a PWM(pulse width modulation) thing for LEDs... it basically simulates sunrise, sunset, and daylight... with a cloud cover switch... maybe ever weather if I can get this right... LOL :D

well i went the cheap route, i just bought a ton of strips and mounted them in a custom aluminum hood i fabricated in my sheet metal shop. the stips come assembled in waterproof casing with resisters alread installed and everything. I think i ended up using 354 LEDs to light my 90 gallon tank. 12 strips with 22 leds and 6 strips with 15 leds. It gets a little warm but not bad at all, the aluminum really helps to dissapate the heat. I just hope the plants stay alive. I think it falls short of my 4-t8's i was using but your right the shimmer is out of this world..

Oh and i just stumbled across this thread on google and had to post up my DIY project. So hi and how are ya!

Mike

Interesting project, nice hood, shame it won't last long. Chances are those are 5mm LEDs, practically useless. 5mm really don't last long and dont provide near enough PAR to grow plants, your 4 bulb T8 strip would provide far more lighting.

Sorry to say it, but you wasted your money. High Power LEDs such as Crees or Luxeons would have been a far better choice.

Out of curiosity, how many watts does a strip use, and where did you get the strips?

well around 22 watts. really no heat. I did research on the Luxeons and while they are the best it wasnt in my budget. This isnt reef and only freshwater so i think a few plants will grow fine with 354 of them. oh and i got the strips from my local hardware store.

after two days i notice the plants responding to them. I mean its 3/4 the brightness of my t-8s i have before and after pictures of the them both.
