35G Hex Planted : Journal

So I was browsing IFS (Internet Fish Stores) and had some fun picking and choosing for about an hour and a half. I was really psyched and prepared to order some fish for this 35 Gallon Hex and then I calculated the shipping to here in Hawaii. I wanted to order $39.00 worth of plants and fish and shrimp and the shipping was to be $67.00. Not gonna happen! I'll just be keeping an eye on fish stores for what I'm looking to get. After all the IFS browsing I decided on getting 10 pygmy corys, 2 red cherry shrimp, 2 khuli loaches and some hardy plants. The only downside was the shipping but at least it helped me decide on the type of fish I'm looking to get. I still don't have an idea of a larger size fish that could easily fit in this community. Also, I was thinking of getting a couple snails too...would that be too many algae eaters for one tank? I was thinking zebra nerite snails so from my research, they won't breed because they need brackish water to breed.

Thats a good stock. I'd bump the kuhli # up to 4-5 as they are a shoaling fish enjoying the company of others of their kind. Maybe a few angelfish or dwarf gourami's as a big-ish kind of fish?

The only algae eaters in the tank would be the cherry's and the snails. So I think that'd be alright as long as you gave them other food aswell.

My only worry with the khuli loaches is that I'm confusing khuli loaches with dojo loaches because I have a loach (picture) and I want him to have partners but I've read on a couple places that he is more fond of colder water and most freshwater fish aren't....

Also, since my wife kept putting off doing her water change, I went ahead and did it with the vacuum and pulled a ridiculous amount of nastiness from the gravel and stirred quite a bit of it up in the water. I'm about to test the nitrate levels again, even though I probably should wait until tomorrow but I want to see how quickly they can drop. Here is a video of how nasty the tank was right after the vacuuming. As you can see, I am not a fan of having those goldfish in there considering their ridiculous bio-load.

Yeah I do think that dojo's prefer cooler water. Also khulis have tiger sort of stripes on their body so they're pretty easy to tell apart. I'm not sure if the dojo could go with your goldfish and guppys or not either. But either that or you could sell it? Or maybe keep it? I dont know

Atleast get 6ish khulis though.

It doesn't actually look that dirty?

It's not that it's ever dirty as in discolored or hazey. It's just all the droppings or whatever they are settle in the deep gravel (IMO too much gravel) and when I do vacuuming or water changing it all gets stirred up. I just checked the water again and the nitrate level is still around 100. Guess I'll be doing another water change tomorrow.

There it is. Picture can't lie. That's the second time I've run the test on this tank tonight and still get those results after a waterchange.

Well those test strips didn't read those levels on my other tanks...just this one.
