40 Gallon redone

So what all fish do you have now? I've lost track, did you get or still want corys? Those might make the difference between room for apistos & not...but you have those 20g, right? A pair of apistos could have a breeding tank & a fry grow out tank too...Just more to think about, lol, we're enablers here you know.

The ones in there now are 8 panda cories, 16 harlequin rasboras, 2 platy fry and 1 dwarf gourami. The two platies are most likely going to be rehomed at some point when they get bigger though.

My sister actually took over the remaining 20g tank so she could breed ghost shrimp for her axolotls. Which she then eventually decorated, planted and stocked with endlers too lol.

Ya know, I think I'd see how your current stocking works out before taking the apisto plunge. Corys really don't understand the whole territory thing like cichlids do, especially breeding pairs. I like slightly understocked tanks for long term happiness & your current fish seem like a good mix.

See how these fish you have now grow out in several months. You might be wise to add 3-5 panda corys rather than a new breeding species...& maybe your corys will breed too!

Yeah you're right, i'm super content with the fish i have now, wouldn't want to disrupt the harmony i seem to have now by throwing in more fish than i really need.

Actually, i was watching my fish earlier during feeding today and seeing how the gourami behaves with the others. He does not seem to mind any of the fish in there except for the platies for some reason, something about them doesn't sit right with him or something? He will literally sit in a pile of cories eating pellets with them or swim calmly with the rasboras but if the platies go near him he chases them away.
Is there any reason why that might be?

Do the platys nip him at all? Those "feelers" can be tempting... Could it be a "color thing", his or theirs? Is it just during feeding? I don't know, I don't remember DGs eating off the bottom but it's been a really long time since I kept either.

You have lots of plants & rasboras to help break up sight lines & diffuse any aggression. How long has this been going on? If just a couple weeks, hopefully they'll work it out soon...

I wouldn't put it past them to nip him, they do the same to me when i stick my arm in there for water changes. That would make sense though since the others i know never try to mess with him. I haven't caught him doing this during any other time besides feeding, but that's because i watch them the most after i drop the food in. I'll try to see if he does it any other times too. From what i've seen it's only been a few days, but the platys have been hiding a bit more than usual for the past week so maybe even longer.

My gourami is a very slow eater so the rasboras always get most of the food that floats around, he has to settle for the pellets on the ground since the rasboras ignore those bits. So that's probably why that happens.

It hasn't been long then. You might try a half portion of food, wait a bit, then add the rest. Or try some slow to sink foods. I can be crabby if I'm hungry too, lol.

We love some new pics!!

I do have an update pic actually!

I just got some softer sand so that the corys have the option to sift through it and they really seem to like it! minutes after adding it in they have their entire faces buried in the stuff, they're all so cute!
The plants have also been growing very well for me too, though the amazon sword isn't as tall as it used to be because of all the old leaves dying off. There's new growth at the base of them so i think they're fine (they were from my old tank with the death sand).

Huh, I don't see any pesky platys, lol. A very attractive tank! You must be an energetic weeder of vals, they look good & under better control than my "jungle vals".

A friend had given me a huge sword when I set up my 75g several years ago, it was spectacular! But even with root tabs in the pool sand it gradually got smaller & smaller. I sometimes think it has died out but then I find a few small leaves. I know it's from several things: too many plants blocking light or in root competition, my bad ferts use & my love of busy bottom feeders, sigh.

Now don't take this as a criticism, but if you're not getting apistos...you might want to remove the "pot cave" & plant a pretty colored crypt in its place. "Mi Oya" is maroon & lovely but bronze or brown wendtii would also make a nice contrast to all your green plants. Just a thought...

I actually haven't trimmed the vals at all yet, just removed dead leaves from the obligatory melt all my plants go through at the start. I love the look of them now, they're filling up that back wall just how i wanted!
If you look towards the middle, you can see two blueish/silver blurs and those are the platys lol.

I put that pot in originally because it was in the quarantine tank and the gourami liked to hide in it a lot so i figured he'd like it in the main tank too. He goes in it sometimes but now it's a cory hangout spot more than anything. So i kinda want to keep it in there for them.

I do however think i want to replace the sag in there with something else, it doesn't really go with the rest of the tank that much. I really like the look of that crypt but i don't think it'll replace that large space well enough. Do you have any suggestions? (In case you don't see them they're right behind the pot and at the front of the tank in front of the swords)
