58g Planted w/overflow and sump

I saw "super red" BNs a far but good shop the other day. They look like yours, maybe 1.5", so maybe they just take a long while to color up. Too bad about the sex ratio...but do you really want more than 1 pair?
Mine are coloring up a bit except the smallest one. They look best in subdued light so I am excited to see them in the 58g with the cycling light. 1 pair would probably be best but I wouldn't mind 2 pairs for back up.

Inverts...
I really liked my purple & pink mystery snails but I kept them in a rimless 40g long & they'd often climb out & fall to the wood floor. They made a ping pong ball-like thunk noise & I almost always heard it to rescue them. 1 was out almost a day I think, but survived. The egg masses got tiresome after a few.
I can just imagine the little guys going *pong* I am still open to glass tops, just haven't made the trip to get them yet. There is only about 1/2" of open space till the rim in this tank and it is consistent since it's an overflow. In the past I've always had to lower the water level to get them to lay eggs (or not top off or WC every week) so I think if I want them to reproduce successfully I will have to intervene.

Filter shrimp look cool!! But I also think they just sit in 1 spot & might get boring after a while.
Yup, that's what they do when they are happiest. I'm ok with that though.

Rabbit snails, again look cool & are expensive...Does Rachel still sell them? I know less of them than filter shrimp.
No, no one does. They were everywhere when I wasn't able to keep them, them and the small rainbows like forktails and celebes, all but gone now that I have room for them and still just as expensive lol.

Dwarf frogs, meh, I don't see the appeal. & having to hand feed the little buggers...I'd vote no!
To each their own. I love frogs so, appealing. :) Rachel has them and does not have to hand feed so that is a big plus that makes me consider them. But ease of feeding the tank as whole is certainly a factor. Still considering.

Micro crabs...kinda cute...aren't they self cloning & make a ton of the little things...Me & heavy breeders, not so much.
Breeding is not a goal of mine and they don't breed readily. But they are probably on the chopping block anyway.

What about the expensive shrimpies (caridinas)? I know I don't have the $$$ for them & they must be a bit difficult since I don't see them much anymore...& then there's your water...Neo blue shrimp are pretty...are your RCS still doing well...finally after the other tank's issue? Are they in this latest version of this tank? I've gotten confused...
lol I'm confused too! The RCS are in the plan for now unless I add fish, then I would give them their own breeding tank. They are doing good. Breeding, slowly though. Constant saddles but few berried. Literally just looked over at the tank now though and there is a small berried female front and center! The only caridina I could possibly try and have actually seen for sale are tigers (reg, super, red, tangerine), malawa and babaulti. And with their price tag I would want to put them into a breeding situation, at least at first. I'd say babaulti would be tops on that list because I've kept them before but it was yrs ago when I had shrimp issues so I'd like to see how they do now. There are actually some other shrimp I've only seen profiles for that I'd love to try though. But that's for when I hit the lottery. ;)

Nerites, so many cool looking kinds! I know you have some...how're they doing?
I'm always on the lookout for other nerite types, love em! Talk about a high price tag and unbreedable though. :( They are doing great, all present and accounted for and growing well.

BTW, since we're catching up on all you tanks, what did your parents say re Africans or goldfish in possible 135g? Uncle's furniture etc?
Tank is not happening. They would have liked a bigger tank with new options of fish (and the colors and rockwork for the Mbuna was my father's favorite setup) but the house is just too old and broken for such a big tank. My friend's father even offered me his 150g with stand, top, sand, rocks etc for $200.:( I was suddenly surrounded by big tank deals! lol Furniture is definitely coming as well so another reason for no big tank.

If you want to try getting the SRs to color up, try feeding red food.. say red pepper. If you make your own adding paprika will help out.
I had no idea paprika was fish approved! Thanks

The fighting will likely mean they need more caves.. I am pretty sure mine have bred before getting significant bristles
Yeah, I only have 6 caves right now, 1 each but figured that would be fine cause they were still young. Apparently they had other plans. Working on small caves now.

If you go with rabbit/tylo snails, be sure to QT well and watch for leeches and/or other parasites... But if you can get them in good condition I believe they are easy to breed and should be easy to sell.
Absolutely. I would only buy captive bred ones so that helps with the parasite issue too.

If you want to go with shrimp, yell what you want and I will see what I can find.. I know I can spare some Malawa shrimp if you want something small and can't see. And I know I could likely spare a bunch of red rili shrimp.. I think there are blue dream too but no idea of their number.

Otherwise I will be looking untidy at a picnic at Hand Aquatics next month, and at the international shrimp competition in Chicago in November; so at be able to find a source or 2 for you.
Thanks! I wouldn't want to mix Neos (keeping the RCS for now) and yeah the Malawa are kinda blah IMO.

Ok, Mr.Igoeverywhere. Do you ever seen things like rabbit snails, nerites (other than zebra or olive), forktail rainbow, celebes rainbow etc., filter feeding shrimp, thai crabs etc at these events/clubs? I was also looking for aplocheilichthys macrophthalmus (think it's been changed to poropanchax) too but I think my only chance might be local clubs. And it's hard to tell apart from the more common normani but it's water requirements are totally different. Absolutely not expecting you to look for me, just getting a read on the event/club scene. Because when I used to go to these things I never found what I was looking for.

Pictures coming later!

I think Rachel stopped carrying the rabbit snails because of having to de-leech them by hand with tweezers if my memory serves.

I will keep my eyes out for you. I may be at a couple of other auctions this year too...

Sometimes Josh at Batfish Aquatics can get a good ariety of animals, he might be worth checking out too

Yes that's why she stopped carrying the rabbits. It is a shame she is such a heavy import stocklist sometimes because things like rabbit snails and forktail rainbows are easy to breed. And forktails were only collected once and all subsequent stock is captive bred which means she will basically never have them again.

I appreciate you offering to look around for me but please PLEASE don't feel obligated to anything. I expected nothing more than past info when I asked about what you see at events.

Nada at Batfish currently but thanks for the suggestion. They are one of the few vendors that stood out at the Monster Fish Konvention because they had unusual stuff!

I don't feel obligated.. but would love to help out if I can.

You can never tell what I might want to get for myself either.. but I will drop you a line if I see something.

Josh frequently has preorder lists, and I expect I will see him the end of next month, as well as other times...you might also check with Mark at Pets Plus in Norriton PA, he frequently gets interesting stuff too.

Lots of regulating stuff will depend on people's mood... But if you post on their Facebook pages if anyone has what you want, they are likely to be sure to let you know :)

Tons of pictures coming up!

New planlets starting again already after last big trim and an amano molt, always a satisfying sign.
IMG_3766.JPG
There were 3 of them on the wood when the lights clicked on but I wasn't fast enough. Light just came on though so their colors aren't that good here
IMG_3768.JPG

This is what I mean by they don't eat as vigorously as I'd like...
This is what a slice of golden zuchinni looks like in the am in the 58g
IMG_3740.JPG And this is what it looks like in the SRBN tank at the same time!
IMG_3741.JPG
The bronze crypts I recently added, almost no melting so far!
IMG_3743.JPG
A little floater ring I threw together because I was worried they wouldn't survive in the QT, I was right.
IMG_3744.JPG
MONSTER! Looks like it is eating the nurii lol
IMG_3745.JPG
Tried to get a shot of that small berried RCS I saw this morning but it was tough in the sunrise lights.
IMG_3746.JPG IMG_3748.JPG
3 little shrimp I saw at the same time as that berried one. They all love the new stems, I see them here often.
IMG_3749.JPG IMG_3750.JPG
And since I was up, sunrise lighting, sorry for the reflections, curtains were closed but the sun is strong at that time in the am
IMG_3751.JPG From my seat
IMG_3752.JPG
New stems were doing great, grew like crazy, side shoots etc. Then after the water change last night the bottom leaves went yellow and started falling off. You can see them in the FTS on the overflow screen. I cleaned those screens last night and there was no stem debris on them.
IMG_3756.JPG
Other stems rebounding with tiny new leaves (all new plants were dried out or mush when I got them btw so lots of loses)
IMG_3757.JPG
All that "survived" of the 5 swords, they were completely dry when I got them so I am surprised this much is "alive" actually
IMG_3758.JPG
Hard to get a picture of the bronze crypts but other buce stick there is a newly made one of all the lose pieces I found
IMG_3759.JPG
Just a couple amanos of different shades
IMG_3762.JPG
Lights ramping up to peak
IMG_3753.JPG

Now my camera died before I could get pics of the caves I added to the SRBN tank but they are just pvc I cut down and sanded (and boiled). Thankfully they sink!

I found Natural Pet, formerly captain nemos in norriton? 1st thing I saw on their facebook page was celebes, so I hope that's the place lol. Only a hr and 20 mins away too! A long way for a browsing but not bad for a decent purchase (like if they have several things I want at not ridiculous prices).
EDIT - and if I click the shop online link it brings me to something that says petsplus but no online shopping lol

Also found Pet Plus Naturals in Norristown though but they have horrid reviews

The one that used to be captain Nemo's, and before that was Big Al's Philly.

Give Mark a call, or post on Facebook... Tell him I sent you if you think it will help :)

Let me know if there's anything I can do. I plan to go to that pet place on Saturday, I can look if you like, but I would not necessarily be one to suggest buying from somewhere with such a big storm of water for so many tanks.

I've seen forktails at more than 1 lfs here recently. Maybe they are shipped seasonally?

That pet place, meh, I got some gosh-awful plague so I'd be gun-shy, but it may have been 1 off. Once bitten though...25+ years later, I don't forget or forgive.

OK, if you like frogs...but they don't count as inverts OR fish, lol. Nice Rachel has self feeders.

You tank looks good! Nice red shrimp, healthy plants!

2 months later...Tank looks exactly the same except some dirty glass, added an almond leaf (lrg) and added 4 of the SN BN. Yes, finally added the first fish! Literally just now too. Wanted to do it months ago but I've been busy and then sick, ya know life. Plus I didn't have my next fish lined up for QT so figured leave the BNs there to keep the bacteria going but I just couldn't wait any longer. (2 went into the 72g awhile back and they are doing great!)

2 are 1.75+ and super healthy and active

IMG_3812.JPG

1 is 1.5" and for some reason not looking too good. A lot of fin damage and very lethargic but plump, literally pulled up the glass and out of the water to catch him and he flopped into the net when I got him unsuctioned. Hoping that the bigger tank with plants and tons of hiding spaces will get him happy again.
IMG_3807.JPG
1 is 1.25" and much narrower and lighter colored with minor fin damage
IMG_3814.JPG
IMG_3823.JPG

Group shot left to right is tiny, not as tiny and big guy
IMG_3818.JPG

They also had an almond leaf which they seemed to enjoy but didn't help with the fin damage healing. (pics from beg of oct in qt)
IMG_3776.JPG
IMG_3782.JPG

Tried some red bell pepper but after this taste they left it alone, snails loved it though. Going to make some homemade food soon with tons of natural color enhancers
IMG_3770.JPG

During my busy schedule of weddings and PA trips my Nurii had a spathe! I only got these pics unfortunately. I did see it open one day and then when I came back from a trip it was gone. Surprising that this happened because the tank has been stalled because I have not fertilized at all.
IMG_3777.JPG
IMG_3779.JPG

And my nerite snail(s) have found the gold mine of hard water crust and now I am constantly removing them from the overflow box. I tried seeing if they could get out on their own but it failed a couple times so I have to keep an eye on them. The amano get over there once in awhile but they manage to get out no problem.
IMG_3772.JPG

So no dosing except very rare metricide has resulted in stalled growth, more BBA, less glass algae, buce suffering. Nothing surprising there of course but I need to get some nutrients going again. Thinking no root tabs cause the BN will be pooping machines and the crypts are fine just not rapidly growing anymore. And the buce needs column ferts so gonna start with dosing at WCs and see if that is sufficient.

Shrimp are doing OK. I feed VERY sparingly so breeding has slowed. Gonna be making changes to my "fish room" soon though and they might get that breeding tank. More to come on that.

Wow, looking good! A crypt spathe, OMG! I've never had that happen, I'm jealous! I thought that was only with emersed crypts.

Those SRBNs look to be coloring up a bit & man! their tummies look full. What are you feeding them? No wonder you don't need much ferts, they must be poo machines, lol.
