58g Planted w/overflow and sump

My husband's danio bite was much more than a nip (according to him, lol) & he was (at 1 time) used to Central Am. cichlid bites/hair pulling so he's not as wimpy as that may sound.

Just go on your vacation & relax, deal with issues when you get back...no hurry, no worries. Be mellow my friend, it'll all be there when you get home...Deep breath, it's ok! Omm!

BIg update time? Yup! Well, sort of, you'll see. :)

I finally heard back from the shrimp guru and they said to lower KH if possible and do smaller more INfrequent water changes. I have been wanting to cut my tap with RO anyways to make it a bit more normal so I've been doing that in my 55g barrel. But even at 50/50 within a day it's back to tap results! Seems impossible but there is some sediment type stuff (iron is my best guess as it is orange) stuck to the bottom of the barrel that I believe is leaching into the RO water. IMO no big deal, after a few rounds I think it will normalize. Water changes? I already do somewhat in frequent WCs so I will just make them smaller. They were concerned about nitrates but FYI my nitrates never get above 20 even with dosing.

Speaking of dosing... I have been dosing again but very lightly and irregularly nonetheless it has made a HUGE difference. Way less die off, new plantlets are coming in (instead of instantly dying as they were) and they are coming in with good colors again. Buce still hates me though, lots of BBA which I hit with metricide from time to time and no root growth whatsoever. Actually just found a chuck floating around that the plecos must have knocked off.

Speaking of plecos :) Not growing as fast as I'd like (probably due to my infrequent WCs but I hear that isn't really an issue either as long as conditions are good...) but they are by far the biggest of the bunch. I don't see they fight too often but they certainly do fight when near each other. Maybe I will switched some guys around?

Speaking of switching guys around! I have not moved the danios over yet because I REALLY want to get a group of RCS separated out. I have the 20L that has been running empty for I don't know how long now that I will probably move them into. Can't do it right now though cause I got a BIG bamboo today and since the QT is occupied he had to go somewhere. He literally came into the store 3 hrs before I got there so it's kinda like getting it directly from the supplier but I don't get to see if he survives the first week or so being at LFS. *shrug* trade-offs. Considering he hasn't done his first molt since shipping I am hopeful. Also hopeful because 20 mins after adding him to the tank he was actually out fanning which none of them were doing in the stores. There was a really red one there that I decided not to get in case it was extra stressed or wouldn't t keep the color, was sitting away from the other ones and was always sitting a little sideways even when netted out but man he was pretty, regrets but I think it was the smartest choice. I also got a hygro kompact, I've always wanted it, killed it once, gonna try again. :) BTW bamboo shrimp was $13 and potted hygro was $5, I thought they were very reasonable prices for LFS.

Picture time! I'm just gonna start from the oldest and work towards today. Disclaimer - I stopped cleaning my glass regularly lol.
Excuse my dirty overflow cover but I was taking pics of that super red RCS and thought this shot with the Amano was cool to show the size difference. (the new bamboo shrimp is even bigger!)
IMG_3971.JPG A different RCS, I only know it is different because it is smaller than the other oneIMG_3987.JPG
Everyone get is the feeding bottle! Oh look the plecos can get along!
IMG_3974.JPG
Best buddies!
IMG_3975.JPG Oh, nevermind lol
IMG_3976.JPG
See the difference in their "bellies"? I've never had one look like the second guy here.

My view from the couchIMG_3999.JPG One of the super reds but the lights were low IMG_4004.JPG
Peekaboo Bamboo I didn't want to disturb him so I clicked the lights on for just a second to snap this poor picture and he proceeded to back up behind the rock so this is it for now.
IMG_4000.JPG I wanted to QT the plant a bit too (did a metricide dip too) but this tank just has a T8 only so I just put it super close to the surface. Took pot off but left rockwool for now cause this tank is rather clean. Looks really clean and nice though. Actually the whole store (Pet Supplies Plus) was nice and clean and no dead fish but strictly bread and butter fish.

Questions!

How long do you QT your plants? I don't want to leave it there long and kill it.

I have some decapped brine I can feed the bamboo but I will crush some community flakes and spirulina flakes for him too. What else can I supplement him in QT? The QT tank is just rocks and sand, pretty clean.

How long would you QT the bamboo? I know he will do MUCH better in my "dirty" planted tank but don't want to rush it either.

Upcoming changes
I will be removing some RCS, swapping some SRBNs, adding danios and doing some sort of rescape or clean-up (no I haven't done it yet, stop yelling at me).

EDIT: sneaky little shot I missed. Just showing the new baby crypts mostly

Well, I need to reread (I'm cooking now) but nice red shrimp & Amanos. That SRBN with the off-center stomach is very odd looking, I haven't seen that before. The first looks to have heavier redder lips, a sex or size difference? The tank looks great! It took me a minute to understand the feeding cup.

I like your bamboo shrimp peek a boo pic but haven't kept them. I remember they like flow to send micro-foods into their catcher mitts. What filter are you using?

I "think" I've killed Hygro Kompact before, it might be needier than other hygros. I think you're wise to boost it up to the light. It may be a heavier feeder too.

I don't really QT plants. I rinse under running tap water with chloramines, look them over for dead leaves, snails & their egg masses but not obsessively. Sometimes, if they seem iffy, I soak them in untreated tap water up to maybe 24 hours. Of course, mine almost always come from my plant club & you have well water without chlorine or chloramines. I'd think a dilute Excel dip would be sufficient. But rock wool I worry will send fine fibers all over the tank. I spend some eye-straining time to pick it off & rinse vigorously under running water. It just seems like attic insulation, although I believe it's different. I don't want it in my tanks. Too many itchy memories or insulating the attic at my last house, lol.

Gotta go!

Thanks for stopping in Nancy!

SRBN - It's stomach is weird, ok, it's not me. I had other pics from that shoot and it looks like it is just that one pic that the lip looks different but good eye.

Using an aquaclear....50? (if it's not a 50 it is a 70 lol) on the 20L with the Bamboo. I have a perch setup for him in front of the flow but I have a smaller powerhead I can toss in there too.

I know but I love the kompact. lol I tried not to disturb the rockwool much so I could keep it for the couple days I want it in this tank before moving it to a better home.

Just had to go check on him again and look at the monster! He is a solid 3" and he does not like the camera, always moves away when he sees the green light. IMG_4008.JPG IMG_4009.JPG

That guy is SUPER shy and he hates the lights. I've tried target feeding him a couple time but mostly he hangs out in the deepest cave in the tank and hates me lol. I actually thought he escaped until I started taking rocks out. Hopefully he will molt soon and be less shy and more hungry. Anyone have experience with bamboo shrimp?

I am going away again in a couple days for 2 weeks so I'm just gonna leave this messy teaser for you guys....

EDIT: I did get my new GH test kit (which is so much more vibrant in colors) and the gh is 10 in the tank.

For my records. New RO cut water is about 33gs tap and 12gs RO
8.2 pH (my never changing pH, it was like 7.4 when the barrel was first filled though)
7 KH
8 GH
95 TDS
*shrugs*

Shrimp still seem to be dying for unknown reasons. Found 2 stuck to the overflow today and one was a berried female. :( But I also see all sizes of babies all the time. I have to break down my 72g ASAP though and that requires the danios to be moved into here so buh bye babies and maybe all RCS. They immediately took to chasing the shrimp out of the plants, haven't seen an actual takedown yet but they will at least stress them to death. I tried to catch some shrimp beforehand but they did not cooperate. Breaking my heart but that's life, the danios will be fed well at least, right? (positive thoughts) Tried leaving the shrimp trap but the danios go right into it instantly and repeatedly, idiots lol. No pics of them cause...they are danios and I'm not that skilled lol. I will be adding some odd end senior fish to this tank too when the 72g gets broken down.

The Kompact did ok, 2 out of 3 bunches are still alive but not doing great. I'm not gonna stress over them, if they die they die.

Another thing I bought and abandoned with my vacations is the bamboo shrimp. Who molted and is doing good, I think. Moved him to this tank today too and he had a nice big poo so that's always a good sign IMO. Completely wasn't thinking pictures when I moved everyone and he surprised me being stuck onto a rock I was removing that not his normal rock so glass is dirty, lighting is horrible etc etc. but I did get a couple crappy photos (positive).

We're blending! lol You can see one patch of the kompact here
IMG_4033.JPG
out of focus
IMG_4034.JPG
Disappearing! But you can see the red in his tail here. He has a slight red tint all overall but like I said the lighting washed everything out, those are the metallic red crypts!
IMG_4036.JPG

Current stocking
11 longfin leopard danios
1 golden zebra danio
2 super red BN plecos (Still not showing bristles!!!)
1 bamboo shrimp (monster!)
1 zebra Nerite
2 olive nerite
1 gold spiky nerite
Amano shrimp
RCS
"Pest" snails

Soon to be added for sure
1 rummynose tetra (8+yrs old)
3 Cardinal tetras (6+ yrs)
1 kuhli loach (6+yrs)

Unsure about adding
3 roseline sharks - The tank isn't as long as I would like but if I don't find a suitable home for them this is where they have to go. I really don't want to part with them either, they are train to hand feed and I'm afraid a move might kill them especially considering how odd my water is. If I keep them and they live long enough I will put them outside this summer, like FL retirement. :)
1 unidentified tetra - Buddies with the roselines now, before we called him the b@stard because he was such a jerk but now he is cool. Got him with a bundle that included that old rummynose and my LFABN that passed recently.
5 LF black skirt tetras - Got these for the mommy but meh to me.
2 SRBN - I think 4 BNs is too much for this tank but they clearly do best in this tank so maybe temporarily....it could happen! lol My 29g "shrimp" tank is gonna get the boot soon too so who knows.

And would still like to add
more nerites, different varieties
mystery snails

Then I'm done? ......

Broke down the 72g today and I'm pooped! Added the 3 cardinals, 1 rummynose, 1 kuhli and 2 SRBN. I don't expect to ever see the kuhli again unless I bait him with food cause he was instantly lost in the jungle. Danios are a bit boisterous for these old timers but there is plenty of quiet places to hang out too. I was able to net out a berried RCS so that's super exciting! I've had 1 amano in the 29g for a couple days and she did ok so I added the RCS too, fingers crossed.

The 2 SRBNs are 1/2 the size of the guys that have been in this tank already! But way less freckling.
Couldn't get a good side by side but this is pleco A, bigger.
IMG_4052.JPG
And pleco C in the same area
IMG_4059.JPG

I was trying to take pictures from my seat (during peak lights ugh) and this is the only one that came out passable
IMG_4048.JPG

To my complete surprise I looked over today and there is the bamboo shrimp right out front! In the darkest area possible but whatever. I almost turned the flash on but he hates even the green light that blinks before the pic so I didn't wanna be that mean. Even is this low light you can see his red more. Got a measurement too, just a hair under 3".

(Roselines, extra and skirts went into my 30g QT tank for now and are doing just fine, even less skittish than before)
