Abrassion/swelling on puffer...?

I'm sorry things aren't looking well for your puffer. :( I've always had good luck with FW Melafix. You could still try that, since you don't have a skimmer. Maybe that's part of your problem?

Perhaps its just that. I think they just slapped on a marine label on the freshwater formula and called it a saltwater version with a higher price tag.

:irked:

Amp, after reading about it more, it seems like the kanaplex is more of an internal thing (http://www.seachem.com/Products/product_pages/KanaPlex.html). It says that it gets absorbed by the fish for internal infections and is effective for fish that refuse food.

The neoplex on the other hand says its great for external infections (http://www.seachem.com/Products/product_pages/NeoPlex.html), which is what he seems to have...his fin is rotting and the skin infection is just spreading out more creeping across his body. You mentioned that kanaplex is for gram positive and negative bacterias, whereas neoplex is for one of them only. But you also said that one of those kills good bacteria too. I don't know what to do...but I need to do something FAST!

I CAN'T TAKE IT ANY MORE!!!

It does treat bacteria, and to a lesser extent parasites, but it is primarily effective against fungus, as are many sulfa/thia-based drugs. Stick with the ones I mentioned for now. Yes, there can be a maddening number of medications. I simply stick to the ones that I know work well most of the time.

I finally found a store that carries both focus and kanaplex and went and got both from there. I've made a batch of food with those medications plus selcon for him. I mashed together krill, mysis, arctic pods and formula 2 frozen and made a paste out of it.

I just did a water change and he's been hiding excessively since...seemed to have gotten stressed by it since he's not feeling well to begin with. I'm going to wait for the others to go to sleep then feed him his special food.

Good luck and here's hoping that everything works out. You should still be seriously considering looking for a quarantine tank. Systemic administration orally works, but you need plenty of it, but a bath would be more effective as I already said, as well as others.

How much is plenty? I just fed him about half a tablespoon of his special food and he gobbled it all right up. I gave it to him little by little with the "just a pinch" measuring spoon. Feels like feeding a baby haha.

I also have a fresh new batch of carbon running in the tank as well.

The bath you speak of...how long should he be bathed in it and should it be the same amount that's written on the bottle for administering the hospital way or should it be more/less?

My little guy is not looking too hot...I think he's just stressing with the medicine in him and all...probably puts stress on his body since it does kill stuff. Gotta think positively.

What I meant by bath is to basically have the fish in medicated water continuously in QT, not the typical very short "dips." I would follow the recommended dosage if you administer it that way, except that I would do it for longer than what the tube says--basically until I start to see improvement and then a bit more. I would say if there is no improvement within 4-5 days, then you may want to consider a different medication in quarantine.

Edit: Sorry to see him in such a state. I can tell that it has definitely spread.
