african Malwai tank mates

When ordering through an LFS, it's still HIGHLY advisable to be home when the delivery arrives at the LFS, and pick them up immeadiately and still in the breeders shipbox. Make sure you're tightly coordinated with the retailer, and that the retailer understands what you need to do.

Most private tropical retailers shuold be all too happy with this arraingement, since they get a small markup, and no shop employees have to unpack them, etc.

Best part is, the fish are never exposed to dubious central-systems, and you acclimate the new arrivals only once; the breeders water to yours. No third step greatly improves the fishes chances.

You should also inquire as to the breeders water parameters so you may attempt to match it withing a few points and degrees.

Good Afternoon, since last I posted there was only a 4" ob zebra. I did find some syno's. Got three of them, brought four mbunas, not sure exactly what they are, just got them from the "assorted African cichlids" tank. Everything was fine. Then my wife brought home a couple of Johani's (sp) These two are pretty aggressive and spend most of the time chasing the other assorted guys around. It's been a couple days now. Was it a mistake introducing these two? :sad :sad

It really depends on what your other africans are. Assorted africans are sometimes hybrids and often no one knows exactly what they are. Johaniis can be the agressor in the tank now, but when the others get larger the tables might turn. Its best you look through some species profiles (http://www.malawimayhem.com) and try to figure out what other fish you have.
Do you know what sex the johanni's are? male or female? if they are a male/female pair they might be overly agressive if they are mating.

With african cichlids, anytime you buy a mish-mash of fish, you never know whether you'll have trouble or not. Johanni's are quite aggressive, and if your 'assorted african cichlids' are aggressive species, too, you can count on some deaths.

That's why it's good to be planful about what cichlids to add (and how many) when setting up a Rift Lake tank. It's no fun netting a dead fish that you've come to like.

The synos should be OK, in any case. They and cichlids tend to ignore one another.

Good luck,
Jim

I took some pics today thinking someone would know what they are. Im thinking orange caps or acei for three, the other is blue with black stripes.. haven't found a match yet for that one. He/she's the smallest one there, yet no one bothers with it... haven't understood that yet, maybe the stripes say something about the fish... the other three get chased, then when they're not, they chase each other in a circle.. gills flared, mouth open kinda funny. How do you post them?
