Am i doing something wrong?

I would break-down and go with the Bio-Spira. Cycled my Plecos new home in 2 days with help from the old filter.

I never managed to get the old 10G community stable until I dosed it.

alright so this is my plan... Im going to get bio-spira. I know the instructions tell you to use with a NEW tank. My tank has been running for two months, so im thinking i can get 4 more danios, do a big enough water change to get the ammonia way down and then add the bio-spira and the new fish. do you think this will work or should i just put the bio-spira in the way my tank is now

I would put the Bio-Spira in, wait for the Ammonia levels to drop to 0 and then add the new fish.

Note: They recommend removing carbon before adding the Bio-Spira.

Heads Up`

Would'nt you know it...I found an article in Tropical Fish Hobbyist by Laura Muha. As it turns out temprature can affect nitrifying bacteria. Although specifics were not mention as to how warm or cold, the article does mentioned that warmer water can contribute to the die off of bacteria because, and I really want to stress this point, the lack of oxygen in warmer water. Beside temperature a low PH is also bad for nitrifying bacteria with 6.5 inhibiting its growth which is probably why discus and ram keepers have to change their water religously.

As I mentioned earlier I would turn the heat up a little, probably around 82 - 84 and make sure you have plenty of surface agitation from the filter to make sure that the tank is well oxygenated. Maybe lower your water level a 1/4 inch will help with the agitation.

Happy Cycling

If the blue filter has been in a while the carbon is probably not activated anymore, so you could just dump the bio-spira on the bio media. That is what I did.

so in other words, take out my blue filter and just leave the bio filter?

You don't have to take anything out of the filter unless it's some sort of ammonia remover. Carbon new or old will not hurt your cycle. Do you have any bio-media in your filter?(Bio-media are Bio-balls, or ceramic rings that benificial bacteria attaches itself to). Without bio-media in your filter the only thing that will hold good bacteria is your gravel, decorations, rocks etc.

I'm guessing he has a sponge of some sort that sits in there, that's what my old HOB filter had.
