why do people say to put amonia in the tank when u first set it up and how would i go about doing it

Hi Danielle, and welcome to the forums! :)

Read the sticky above entitled "Cycle"... It had info about adding ammonia to the tank until you get to 5 PPM and what you need to do after that. This, of course, is a fishless cycle, so you don't want to do this to a tank that already has fish in it!

You'll need some test kits too, to monitor the process of your cycle...

:)

in my 20 g tank i ne4ver used ammonia to start it just the normal chemicals u have to put in it like cycle waste control and the chlorine remover

do i have to use amonia i would rather not

As long as you can test no ammonia or nitrite and some nitrates you are in good health.

But those TWO chemicals are not normal and dont do anything. They dont do anything, water is more useful than them.

The de chlor is good stuff depending on the brand. You need to use it every time you change the water.

what r soem good chemicals to put in my tank to keep it healthy and stuff

cycle is basically garbage, I wouldn't use it and probably most would agree. If you use bio-sphira that is a great product to speed up your cycle...
