And so it begins!!------72 gallon.

Finally the return pump. I recieved this one free, and am not sure how good it is. Any suggestions or tips would be great!!

The guy who gave it to me said it's 1200+ GPH. I can't find any info on this pump though on the net.

Maybe some of you would be able to tell from the pic. It's very wel built.

Edit: It says quite one, but it also says grundfos on it? Maybe it;s a pond pump??

Good skimmer, with your turnover rate, you don't have enough, 30 to 60 times per hour is what you need for sps or reef tanks, other wise, it is likely they will not live, also what type of lights are you going to run? i would go with MH or T5.

Wow really?

I allways thought 15-20 was more then enough.

Skimmer im picking on wednesday by the way.

Huum, well if that's the case. I could allways add a closed loop pump after, as it's gona be a while before i go SPS anyways.

Lighting will be MH down the road. PC for now, but will do lps only, even then limited ones.

Holy mackeral! So, for a 90g reef tank, one would need 2,700 - 5,400 gph of circulation!?! I would think the tank would be like a spinning vortex of death with that much current!

Nup, i have quoted this from anthony calfo and the sps forum in reefcentral, 30-60 turnover rate per hour is needed in sps, lps and reef tanks.

Fine skimmer.
Mooch, for what your doing a 20 minimum turnover is fine. What you need to do is watch for dead spots and have circulation throughout the tank so no debris can accumulate. A good cleanup crew is important too. You need some quiet areas in the tank where the fish can rest, and not all coral enjoy being blasted by current. Some of the softies prefer more quiet water as do many of the LPS. Look up their needs as far as water current and lighting goes. It sounds like a go. Keep on with your plans.

I don't know anything about pumps, but I'd fire it up and calculate how much volume it pumps, remember the height the water has to travel back up into the tank is a big factor here. Good luck plumbing. If you were going closed loop its best to do it when the tank is empty, right from the start, you'll need to drill holes and add bulkheads for the loop.

Ya, i plan on having two powerheads for extra circulation and some random flow. As for the skimmer, im getting a great deal imo. Brand new, and never used. Still sealed in box. Really nice guy too, whos gona meet me halfway.

You guy really made me realize how important the skimmer is. So i thought i may as well not skimp on that one piece of equipement.

As for the whole 30-60 turn over. Ive seen some very good SPS tanks with only 15-25 the turnover. Not trying to say anyone is wrong, but ive seen it done with much less flow.

Having said that, if i need more flow, i could allways add a closed loop system. Or possibly a couple of Seio 1100 Water Pump (1100 GPH) powerheads.
