any suggestions for killing rats?

i remember once putting peanut butter in the bottom of a bucket and putting a plank up to the top, i caught about 10 mice that way, than you just take it outside and put enough water in for the suckers to drown

Get a Schnauzer.

More inside cats, maybe borrow some from someone else and just flood your house with a bunch of cats who know how to hunt (not the kind that just lay there and beg for food).

i keep pets rats and they are very smart

bucket is out of the option for 2 reasons they can just 5-6 foot into the air (seen it ) and they are awsome swimmers unlike mice

they will eat thru 2-3 inch square wood in a night no worries
they have an awsome sence of smell so u wont poisen them easyly
they are secape artists so silly traps are pointless
as u have seen they will do anything for food and if that involves watching another set of a trap to get the food they will then they come back for rat supper

sorry but ur stuffed get the fuel and torch the place start the new house earlyier than planned

I would go with the snake idea. I would be worried about my children as well. Nothing super dangerous/ poisonous, but something to get the trick done. Plus, free snake food. any LFS in your area that sell snakes? A while back, my auntie "rented" a snake from the store, big huge thing and it got rid of a crapload of mice and 1-2 rats.

rats can kill a snake..seen it happen and just catching the snake in the winter is going to be hard

I was thinking of more than just one snake. But like I said, the snakes will come on their own. Just provide them hiding places around the house. Black Rat snakes/racers are your best bet.

well i guess i have to wait till winter and when the coons and opossums move into the attic they chase them down and kill them for food,.. yes i have a zoo, here

the only thing bad about old houses ,..
i have a dutch frame house(roof) and the attic isn't accessible, so they run ramped there,.. also it houses bats so a real prob, with the rabies thing,..
all my cats are good hunters but not much likes to tangle with an experienced rat,.. also my one dog chases rats but is outside in the garage,.. if she can see one out in the open she goes for it but they tend not to make the same mistake twice,..

like other poster said they can jump like crazy and fight and lunge when challenged,..
my poor daughter was getting something out of cupboard for me and a rat jumped out at her and ran away,.. this is getting dangerous,..

can't drowned them easily,.. i used to get them years ago in my barn we had 55gallon drums for feed and they would jump in to eat the oats and one day i moved all the oats and filled half way with water and put a few scoops of oats on top as they float and at night the rat thought it was just oats,. and couldn't reach bottom or get grip to jump,.. but that wont work in my house,.. as they like my inside goodies,.. we have some gardner snakes but they wond stand a chance with the rt, and won't be able to swallow them,, except for newborns,..
we don't see blacks here for years and we've been here 8 years,.. we are surrounded by woods and they like it there,..

I used to use sticky traps at our work shop when it was infested, I would check the trap and find parts of rats on them where other rats chewed them off and ate them. I found a spot where the grand daddy used to eat and there were legs, feet , heads piled up where he was munching on them , real bizzare !!!!!! I eventually caught him and it was the first rat that I caught that actually barked at me !!!!!!!!!! I drowned his donkey :)
If you catch them in a havahart trap you just drown them and your done. You can get the size trap that is made just for rats. They love peanut butter .
We eventually got rid of the dogs, got cats , and no more rats :)
