any suggestions for killing rats?

I hate the idea of killing them but this sounds like an extremely dangerous situation to be living in... yeah, I would do the same as Rod is saying. Once the rat (or rats) are in the trap, dunk the whole thing in a garbage can full of water or whatever. I am surprised the authorities didn't call for more drastic measures...

I would not be able to sleep knowing there are rats in the house ! I saw a palmetto bug in my condo once and freaked out :) Not that I'm afraid of bugs but just remember sleeping in a hotel one time and a cockroach crawled on me :( I friggin screamed like a little girl LOL :)

next step is the gun,.. i can practice,..lol never shot one but oh h*ll time to start,.. prob is they are quick,..lol besides after a few shots the house will come down and they will leave,..lol

i tried to drowned a baby opossum 36 hours in the water and then i dumped it out went back about 20 minutes later to rid it, and it was gone,?????????? playing opossum?? not real good at drownding things,..lol

also had the have a hearts and they can open them,.. mice can do it,..i'd hate to see what a rat can do

i'm just going to have to make up a good ole poison and take all the animals away from here till done,.. thats all i can see, as they are breeding faster than i can kill them,. caught about 7 babie/juvies , the last batch mostly were trapped,..

every 28 days anothe batch per female,.. my traps are getting tire as am i from baiting and empting them this is screwy,..

we are out in country and really hate to dish out money for orkin or who ever,.. but there are way too many for us to get them under control,..

Another idea is to build a rat house away from the main house and fill it all the things that rats love. Maybe they'll all migrate out to the rat house in a short time, and try to breed there. It would be alot easier to destroy them there than in your own house.

not the racoon traps, in the winter coons move in the attic and hunt the rats,.. they don't get them all but a lot of them,.. but i have to listen to the ruckus in the walls from them running for their lives and the big coon chasing them inside the walls and attic...

who else would have this happen but me,..lol :headshake2:

Is your basement/crawlspace fixed where your cats and dogs can't get into it? If so I'd get as many of the poison bait bags ( the kind you don't have to open just toss) as you can and toss them under there that will get most of them eventually.
If you do this you will need to monitor your yard for dead rodents to make sure your outside animals don't get a dead poisoned one.

Then you can pick off the remaining stragglers with the larger glue board/ snap trap as well as keeping the food up and cutting off their access as much as possible ect type things.

You can also contact your local county extension service or dept. of agriculture and they will provide pest solutions for you in some cases. They will come out and help you get rid of them and even provide poisons at no charge in most cases.
I have heard of cases where the rodent infestations were so bad they were getting into bed with the children at night under the covers in the winter ( god gives me the hebby geebies) so fixing this now is a great idea.

If they are getting your fish you are probably doing a good job keeping the food limited but you got to find a way to protect the pets maybe even crate the cats at night and put out poison then take it up before you let them out.

I am an animal lover but wild rats or bugs in the house got to go!! I hope you get em out, I really feel for you Dixie.

A BB or pellet gun is fun shooting :)

That is awful. You could try snakes or cats or something. There is some poisons taht won't be transferred to other animals but I would still keep it well away from aquariums.
