Are ghost shrimp killers?

HHmmm......I just went out and bought a bunch of ghost shrimp to add to some of my tanks.......a couple of them are at max size.....alot larger than I thought they get...at least 2 inches.

Here's a pic I took of one of them......

cherry red shrimps are much better, they NEVER attack anything and are true algae eaters.
Every one of those I bought died within a week. Dunno why :(

now does anyone know about amano shrimps? they are a lot bigger than cherry red but also cleans up algae like no other. From all reports seems to be very peaceful shrimp jsut like cherry red. Was wondering if anyone have personal experience with them?
I bought 5 for my big rainbow tank. Last time I saw any of them was three days ago when I changed the water. There were three running around. Dunno if they are still alive or not :)

I'm due for a water change tomorrow, so I'll see if any survived.

wow really? i bought my cherry red (6 total) from aquabid, and those little buggers have been through hell due my newbieness(water parameters changes, temp changes, complete tank cleaning etc). Not a single one died, and 3 of them are really tiny babies too. Now they are very active, swimming around the tank pretending to be a fish! and sometimes restingjust below the water surface on my heater wire.

My whiteclouds/danio tried to eat the small ones as they are swimming around, thinking they are food. Funny to watch, shrimp always got away without a sratch though and they went right back swimming instead of hiding behind leaves.

I say bad luck, give cherry red another try, those are the most hardy shrimp i know of.

ps i also never fed them anything, all my food are floating fish food that gets eaten quickly by fish.

I would say they will only attack fry, or very small helpless fish. How could they do much damage, they have tiny little claws?? I've never seen my ghost shrimp become aggressive and I've had hundreds over the years in with neons, white clouds, gouramis, barbs, sharks, loaches, etc.

I only use them now as feeders to give my cray & crab something to hunt other than snails & for more complete diet (my cray was running around with one hanging out of his claws this morning). Even my cray & crab don't bother my fish, so I can't imagine a ghost shrimp having a shot... They might climb onto a sick fish and finish it off, but I'd think a healthy fish could just swim away.

Ghost Shrimp

I have a 55 gal with lots of ghost shrimp and they have never bothered any of my other fish. I do feed them peeled frozen peas and they LOVE them. I have also heard that the warmer the water, the more aggressive they become. This doesnt seem the case with mine however. I happen to love my ghost shrimp. They are very entertaining to watch. I wish you all luck with your tanks!

I bougth my ghost shrimp as feeders and the ones that survived the attacks from my newts got transfered to my fish tank when I set it up.

One is prego and I found a guppy missing a fin then missing all fins and dead later that day. It did appear to be stressed prior to that though.

I wonder if it is from the huge ghost shrimp, it's about 1.5 inches long maybe a little bigger and it's carrying it's young.

Thanks for the heads up, if I have anymore problems back to the newts tank they go. They were only 12 cents each anyways..

I have to admit they are active and seem to love to eat blackworms but I have never caught them attacking anything yet.

I'd get rid of the shrimp.

IME, yes, they are killers and I'm never buying any more of those little scavaging savages.

I've posted before that I suspected they were killing my otos. I don't think anyone believes me, tho

I saw one attack a kuhlii and a corycat a while back and I saw one attack another cory tonight. I've found a few dead otos with their eyes missing and one dead corycat with missing eyes. I saw a shrimp swim down from the top of my tank with a dead oto in its claws. The oto had no eyes.

They sit on top of my big rock and wait for a fish to swim below and stop. Then they grab at them. Hate 'em.

I rounded all of them up and put them in my son's silver dollar tank. Mr. Cleaner, the Hammer's Cobalt Blue lobster lives in there. He hasn't touched them (typical!), but some day he might. I hope.

Your atypical experiences can be marked up to the fact that LiveAquaria may not, in fact, exclusively offer true Palaemonetes paludosus or similar. As true FW ghost shrimp are remarkably passive, you likely have some sort of juvenile Macrobrachium spp.

I was going to get a coulple of ghost shrimp to put in my 5 gal. Betta tank but I am not o sure about it know.

I would be more concerned about the possibility that your Betta will consume them.

I've kept ghost shrimp with cory cats and the only problem I ran into with them was that they would run up and steal the round sinking pellets before my cories could get to them!!!

Edit: I just wanted to point out, the ghost shrimp I had look like Emgs. They have red bans on their feelers. I dont know if this is just a color variation but the ones Roan Art showed us have no color on them whatsoever.

ive seen them eat headless culls from my fry, but it takes them forever. i doubt they be able to take down any healthy fish. perhaps these fish that the shrimp are "killing" are merely dying then being fed upon.
