Button Quail!

how many of those do you think i could keep in a 4x2 120g tank?

Eh. I wouldn't use a 120g tank. You shouldn't keep them in anything that is taller than 12", and lower is generally better (7-9" minimum). Higher than 12" (and 12 is actually pushing it) and when you go near the cage, they "boink" and can actually break their necks. You could put nylon or something soft on top, but it looks like it would be such a total PITA to use something like that, IMO.

But, if you really want to use that, they need 1/2 square foot to one full square foot per bird. They do not need perches or anything. They actually are supposed to do best in pairs, and pairs can be kept in 10g tanks.

As an update, I just set 35 eggs in the incubator. They weren't from my birds, they haven't started laying yet, but they're from the same breeder. I don't plan on keeping very many of these, it just depends on what I get.

Well, I promised someone that I would pick up some button chicks for them. Contacted the breeder, because I knew he had some that were off the turner and due soon. He sent an email back saying that there were chicks ready to go, so I made plans to pick them up after work today. Here's the results:

how big is a button quail in relation to something that my mind can wrap itself around? i thought that they were like half the size of a chicken this whole time but then you said that a pair can be kept in a ten gallon, so i was like, Whoa wait.... lol. could you post a picture of them next to like a baseball or something?
btw they are all REALLY cute!!!

thank you! :D

No baseballs here, but I figure everyone knows how big the new coke caps are (for a 20oz bottle) and, if not, there's also a 75w basic light bulb. Should cover it for Americans...

And, that's my biggest button. The breeder does have a few that are fatter than this, but this is a good sized button.

thank you for the pics!!
wow they are so petite and adorable! if i had the time, they would definitely be on my "to obtain" list lol
congrats on having a bunch of cute, healthy button quail!!!
