Button Quail!

Yeah, they do "fly." I've lost them in my bedroom before. Luckily, I'm skilled at catching small, fast things that run on the ground (mice, hamsters, gerbils, rats, and now birds...) and my dogs old and blind :D Be careful about handling them if they're not tame and watch those nails!

I believe chefjamesscott has some, I am sure he can offer experiences with them...

well now that you mention it may i introduce you to DAN the button quail

when we got him the lady had him in this

i immediately moved him to this

immediately he perked up and made his cool eagle noise

after he got comfortable in that cage i upgraded him to a cage twice the size of that so now he is living in a cage about 20 times bigger than what he was in the sick lady

in my experience i keep dan inbetween my tiel cage an my love bird cage so that he has avian company on both sides and i keep the back of his cage against the wall so that only from the front is there ever unexpected movement

this being said i make sure that there is no fast movement as if dan get startled he will literally jump and smack his head on the top of the cage

we give him small bird seed like budgie or canary and fresh water on the bottom of the cage we have wood shavings and i added a wood arch decor thing from my chinchilla cage and he likes to hid in it as well as he likes to cllimb on top of it and proclaim loudly that he is indeed the king of the hill

i have found that he is actually a smart little bird and when he knows that he has caught my attention he will strut his stuff to show how fierce he is ill take a few pics when i get home an post them for you

Wow, is that a 10g behind his previous "cage"?! Poor buggar. My guys never really tamed down, but apparantly it's normal for a group to be "wild". Ironically, they can handle the cat staring at them all the time, but I'm not allowed to, it takes them a bit to settle after I sit near the cage. I'm hoping to get a few coturnix, they're supposed to be tamer and you can actually handle them, though they're not as cute.

yeh man that net is the smallest fish net that i have just to show size

sometimes the things i come across as i get pets makes me sick to my stomach its like people dont understand that these are living creatures

my wife calls me doctor doolittle but she changed my last name to doomuch :P

as an aside note i rehomed a tiel from a lady an her hubby who had him for about 8 years and they could never tame him so they put him out there for a free rehome

when i got charlie home to our house he immediately heard birdy an bob as soon as we got in the front door and he started talking so we took him an put him in the hall directly across from them and the interaction was so amazing from what i could observe it was like he was saying to them i always knew i was not alone in this world and they sorta talked back to him saying to him welcome to this great home the master is a good guy birdy likes to give me kisses and will actually take seeds i have chewed from my mouth

well when i picked charlie up i put my finger to his cage an he snapped real fast an bit hard but over the next few months of singing to him an whistling to him he warmed up then one night i came home with my family and as i came to his cage he just looked at me an said ill step up so i opened the cage an put my hand in and he stepped up for the first time then after a few minutes i was able to actually get him out of the cage an take him to the kitchen where i showed my family that charlie had actually calmed down and then he looked at me started huffing real hard did one fast jerk flutter movement an literally died in my hands but as he was fading from this life i honestly could see in his eyes joy that he had actually made this bond so i held him for a while in the kitchen and i have actually frozen him for a future taxidermy

yeh i was totally not impressed to see this joke of a cage that dan came in

I had Buttons last year. I had no luck with them at all. Ordered 36 eggs and only two hatched (my fault, not the breeders, we had power outages =O). Then in the brooder one of mine snuck into a spot where he got fried while I wasn't home, and the other one just didn't make it alone. Then I got a pair shipped to me, the female died in transit, so the person I got them fromw as going to send me two hens free of charge, but while we were waiting for good weather, my male bonked one too many times and snapped his neck. The breeder was so good about it, send me another pair free once the weather was good. I took the best care of them I could, wouldn't let anyone in my room, kept temps up, gave them a night light because they got spooked at night, but in the end they didn't make it. That was when I gave up. I have no luck with birds =( I'm thinking it might be something in the air at my house. At least none of my fish have died.

Seeing all the pictures in this thread makes me miss them. You all have beautiful birds =) Bettacreek, if you feed them mealworms and millet sprays from your hand, they should warm up to you. I didn't want to hold the mealworms for too long, so I used millet and mine started eating it out of my hands and eventually didn't mind me being around.

i miss having quail, even tho they were bobwhite instead of button.

immediately he perked up and made his cool eagle noise

the sound mine made felt like needles in my eardrum, quails are loud for their small stature

I love that noise. I only have two males, so I'm not sure which one does it, but he does it all the time during the day! They're very loud when they do that!

I'm afraid that they'll bonk and snap their necks :lipssealedsmilie: most of the time they seem to fly sideways, not up, thank goodness.

oh i had a pair of Buttons!! they are so cute. but man when they call they are loud!! once i move to a bigger place my boyfriend wants a bird. i think i'll show him buttons. mine loved to hide in the shreded news paper when they were babies. they make such neat sounds when chatting to each other or to you. and they are small! mine were the size of a parakeet. we would let mines walk around my room and when they wanted they would go back into their cage. i want one now.... oh well i got my dogs and my tanks. birds after my dogs die. which will be another ten years. Ibizans dont live long but hes only 4 and my pit will be 9 this year. but go for it. buttons are awesome!
