Cat-proofing my tank

What I usually do is let my cats jump up and fall in......typically they wont do it again.

you know what it took to keep my cat off of the tank? (he's weird and really likes to drink the warm water, he's always in the shower too) It took him breaking the glass canopy and falling in. He went for a little swim and a freak out and has never been back on top since. I had tried, yelling, the spraybottle, two sided tape and foil. It was the swimming that finally did it.

We tried a similar philosophy with the Christmas tree. The minute we set it up we grabbed him and threw him in it (live blue spruce so it was pretty prickly). He sat there and stared at us then started making himself comfortable. That's when we busted out the squirt guns, which he was scared of for about 2 weeks.

devil cat

oh the same cat that fell in the tank *LOVES* the christmas tree. We've got a pretty sturdy stand, so I don't really mind him in it. I mean, it makes an extra mess of needles... and usually an ornament or two gets broken over the season, but it's really not worth the hassle of trying to keep him out, especially as it's only up for a couple of weeks.

I don't want it to get that far. If he breaks the glass canopy then the light is going in with him.

The laser system might work. The other options might get a little messy though.

Ok. my cats always sit on top of my tank and I have long since given up tryng to keep them off of them. I really do not see the problem as long as the top is secure and there is no threat that the cat will actually fall in. Especially with the lights on top of the tank falling in the water this could be a potential deadly situation. My cats sit on all of my freshwater tanks with the tops being secure but do stay away from my saltwater tank. I had left this tank open with no top on it for a very long time until my kitten Ginger decided to jump on top oif the salt tank. This was a horrible experience for her since she did not realize there was no top on this tank. She went for a swim in the salt tank but the splash she created by falling in meant water went everywere and some of the cords that were plugged into a powerstrip got wet as well as the power strip which started smoking when it got wet. It was still smoking and stunk really bad when we took it out of the house. Fourtunely she did not get electrocuted and we were home when it happened.

I would say just to make sure that the tops to the tanks are secure and full proof of cats or anything else falling in. It is the best advice I can give for all concerned you and your cat.
