Cat-proofing my tank

I'm sure I may get some flak for this. My current cat of 10 years was caught by me several times trying to snag a fish with its paw on top of a 30 gallon I used to have about 9 years ago. Yelling, squirt bottles etc worked for about 20 minutes until my back was turned again. I finally lost my temper, grabbed the cat by the scruff of the neck, removed the cover with my free hand and stuck the top of her body right up to the shoulders under the water for an instant. She hasn't even looked at any of my tanks since.

No flak from me---and I say this as a cat lover. That one terrifying (but actually quite safe) experience may have saved your cat's life. Cat + tank is dangerous for everyone and it's MUCH better to have scared her into keeping away from it than waiting for something actually hazardous to happen. If anything, I'd say the greatest risk in that maneuver was to YOU---from getting clawed up by a frantic cat.

I had the same problem with mine. I used the spray bottle and that worked. My cats really hate getting wet :) now they just aren't that interested. Hope you find something that works for you!

When I had my oscar, my cat learned the hard way that fish bite back. LOL! It was the funniest thing ever, I had tried everything to keep him off of my tank and nothing seemed to work more than for a few mins or when I had turned my back. My cat had grown fond of trying to snag my oscar well Leo got tired of a paw being poked in his water and latched on to my cats foot and you would have thought that all hell had broke loose in my house because the cat jumped straight up and splashed water plum up to the ceiling, needless to say my cat was no longer interested in the tank period. My oscar was probaly between 6-8" when this happened.

Nope, no flak from me. This is also an option if the foil doesn't work. I feel this is partly my fault for letting him hang around while I was doing tank maintenance. AFAIK he has never jumped on the tank until today...always just watched from the chair.

Tonight will be little kitty boot camp. :evil_lol:

My only concern- My 20+lb clumsy cat. If he makes the jump, he's probably going through the glass.....
We just took our cats, and left the cover open and put their feet in the water so they realized it's not where they want to jump...
I put a canopy on my 75 as the dining room table is close enough for either to make the jump. $129 for a canopy seemed cheap compared to electrocuted cat, water everywhere, hair in the filtration, etc......

Squirtguns on my fat cat, HA, he doesn't care... He just stares at you, like, is this supposed to be a deterrent?
