so i want a little something to put on my desk at work- good for stress right ;)

i want to keep to a bare minnumum- small -no heater- no filter (i have no problem with daily water changes)

what can i get away with - i thought of white clouds although i've never kept them- may be some ghost shrimp- do they need a heater-

anyway just looking for suggestions

thx a million-K

How small do you want to go? I have 3 white clouds in a 5.5G, although I do filter it. Anything smaller and I would think that you would be limited to shrimp. Also, you could keep a few plants in with them--I keep red melon swords and java moss in a tank with only overhead lighting. Live plants would help an unfiltered tank.

If I was you I would do something that looks like this with a betta.

Make sure you have a real plant. That way the plant will take up the amonia, and you will have to do less water changes. Maybe more like every 3 days or so. Stick with one betta, and make sure the vase is big enough for the fish to swim around.

OMG, joeyg2100, please do not recommend crap like that to people.

NO betta should be in a bowl like that and regardless if there is a plant in there or not, they would have to have the water changed every day.

Bettas need HEAT and surface area to breath air.

The only thing that belongs in a bowl, imho, are goldfish crackers.

I know you said that you do not want a filter, but there are simple desk kits out there. A one gallon for shrimp can be purchased for around $15. If you want fish, the slightly larger tanks can cost anywhere from $15-40ish. Right now a lot of stores have small aquariums on sale. Having a small filter will ensure that the fish (or shrimp) gets air over the weekends. If it gets cool or cold where you live just don't get a beta with out a heater.

I know I would never do that to a fish. One of my co-workers has this setup. The fish swims around all the time, looks healthy, acts healthy. She changed the water in it twice a week. She has had this fish for 6 or so months, and it still is going strong. I know that most of you on here will say that this is not good for a fish, and I agree with that. I was just giving this person and idea of what to do as a last resort. I would suggest that they get a small filltered tank.

im not against clean water or letting a fish swim but between 2 diffrent forums ive read like 10 threads of exsperts who cant keep bettas alive but know some noobs that kept them for years in a jar.

personallly i have a beta in a 5 gallon with a filter and heater and clean water

one thing i want to try is a plant and a drawf frog in oine of those little gallon or half gallon acrylic bowfronts. i may try a shrimp or something in it. right now i have praying mantises in one
