CONFESSION! I FLUSH FISH!

I say:

FLUSH AWAY!!!!!!

What was this thread about again?

I flush them. To quote my Grandpa after a long day of fishing and we are cleaning the days catch.

"You know what they say? Sucks to be a fish."

I was raised in a hunting family, the rule was "don't kill it unless you're going to eat it". There is an exception for euthanasia for pets that were suffering and the hope of recovery was gone, but I've still managed to live by that rule. The difference between a fish I raise in my aquarium and a fish I catch on a line is that one is a pet, one is food. It's the same reason why I won't eat a cow that I know has a name. I know that it's not entirely logical, but neither is investing energy in raising an animal that isn't food. Once we've made that step, there's a different set of ethics that happens. As for antibiotics and such, I try to use them judiciously. If there's no chance, I'll euthanize, but until that point, I'd like to think that the fish would prefer to experience temporary discomfort and live a healthy life for months or years afterwards over that great river in the sky (if fish have an afterlife).
If I do flush, the fish is always dead before it happens. I prefer burial though....I garden and like big tomatoes too!

Rights can only be violated when the victim recognizes it and is offended.

Nah...that presumes that whether a right is violated is contingent upon the person subjected to the violation realising that the act or omission complained of has occurred...a simple example...the right to privacy...surely this is infringed whether the victim sees the stalker peering in at them with binoculars, or whether the victim knows that their private correspondence is being intercepted.

NB rb is wrong (on that one)

Anyway.

As regards flushing live fish...some perspective :-

1. There are far more evil things which can be done in this world.
2. As a matter of fact, anything you do to a fish is not in the least bit close to as serious as a minor act of cruelty (whether physical or not) to a person.
3. They are just fish y'know.
4. Personally I whack mine off the side of the house in a plastic bag before I flush them...it takes 30 seconds...and I don't have to work out whether they can feel pain or not if still alive when flushed.

My leopard gecko didn't eat last night, ruined the eating schedule. I think I'll play it safe and flush her.

I too drop em in a plastic grocery bag and give em a good whack on a hard surface. No mess and more humane than most anything I've ever heard of. Out of he tank and dead in 5 seconds.

How dare you take medicine when you're sick, or use cleaning products around your house, or walk in the grass, etc... Don't bacteria or insects share the same right to life as the rest of us? Saying something like that, you sure as heck better be a vegetarian.

Let us not forget, every time someone has a tumor excised, they commit partways suicide!

uhhh, errrr... you're veggies were alive when you murdered them too. there are organisms alive in your water too. if not someone else killed them for you. i think it's best that everyone who's so dead set on not killing anything should realize these simple obvious things and either starve themselves or get over it and bludgeon one of their pets to death and toss it in a pan with some hamburger helper for dinner.

at any rate i think rb is a good guy just dealing with his day to day realities. he'll justify them as he sees fit just like the rest of us do. arguing things that none of us can prove and even less of us know or understand is pointless. come on guys... let's not get delusional. the man said what he said and much of it is far from sarcasm... accept it. :grinyes:

on the topic of using the remains or "fertilizer" vs. flushing... when i flush it does fertilize my lawn. that's how my system works.

on the topic of the environment... look around... really, look around. most of us have seen a drastic decline in wildlife and acceptable habitats for them in our lifetime. those who have mentioned dead fish not being so good for it REALLY need to look into A WHOLE LOT of things. dead fish are not killing our habitats BUT OVERUSED MEDS ARE. :silly:

at any rate if your one poor sick fishy is threatening to take down your whole colony... and you're not 100% sure what the problem is do yourself, your tank, your dieing fish and your lawn the favor and...
FLUSH THE LITTLE SOLDIER :headbang2:

if you wish to kill it first that's at your discretion.

to touch on burying... i don't want it for myself. i find it odd that anyone would. i find it quite disturbing that people would consider doing so for any pets let alone fish. i also find it's something that when experienced by a child brings up very disturbing and confusing thoughts and feelings to deal with. i don't care if the child was involved or has observed the actual task... it's still disturbing coming to the understanding that that makeshift cross or headstone means that's where fluffy will be for eternity. not only that what kind of person wants a shallow grave in their back yard for their kids or grandkids to discover. :angryfire: i get it, i really do... i've had to live with it my entire life. our society as a world nowadays is truely sick though. think about it... we watch documentaries on ancient civilizations and wonder things like why would they pile up their dead in a cave and enter it at night to worship the remains. then what do our sick twisted realities tell us to do? put some dirt over it and re-visit every year to talk to a rock that symbolizes grandmom. truely sick... yet accepted as the norm. :eek3:
