Well I will read the thread after I post my thoughts.
People may hate me for this but I have to say it FISH ARE SIMPLY FISH AND I AM ABSOLUTELY SURE THAT IF WE WERE SMALL ENOUGH THEY WOULD EAT US WITH NO HESITATION. I love being able to keep fish and even name some of mine, but, they are still only fish AND THEY TASTE GREAT WITH OLIVE OIL, LEMON AND HERBS!!!!
In all truth, I have yet to ever flush a live, distressed or dying fish to the best of my knowledge. I have though used the white portal to get rid of dead fish who have seen better days.
I will do my best to see to it that a sick fish is given the best chances I can give it to recover. Though, I do advocate the taking out of a fish which is going past the point of recovery.
I will usually use one method which results in very quick death if not instantaneous to a second, though I do have the ability to use very sharp knives if need be.
I do my best not to impulse buy fish as I do not like to stress my tanks out with impulse fish and thereby throw out the balance and harmony I have worked so hard to establish. Though as it is in nature so it is in the tank FISH EAT FISH AND FISH BULLY FISH. Most of the deaths I have had in my tanks as of late (past 2 years) have come as a result of these 2 things.
Though I have wiped out a tank with melafix because I was misinformed as to the gallon size, was led to believe it was a 60g when it was in reality a 45g. I have also had a tank wipe out due to a dead fish stuck in a place where it should not have been.
One thing I have come to believe with tanks is that less is more. For example a tank full of juvies may look good but wait till they start to grow up TURF WAR!!!!
I made a decision to move away from any tanks under 100g in favour of 150g+ so that I could give my fish better room, better environment and have better dispersion of nasty stuff in the water. Someone told me a bigger tank will crash less easy than a small tank so I decided to go big.
I will have to say one shortfall I have in fishkeeping is when people approach me to rehome a fish that is to big for them. I did this with 2 pacus and regretted it until I was able to rehome them, because as they grew (and boy did they grow) they became very mean and nasty.
