Confused

well i thought i was doin gok then bam my tiger barb flipped upside down and was dead no sign at all he was going to do that ive done one water change already i think i should do another one i feel like a fish killer im not even going to take this one back for the money im just going to see what happens with the rest and i dont think this ph leval test thing i bought works i tested my tap water with it and it read the same as what was in my tank hmph go figure 7.8 im so frustrated right now i wanna beat something up

sorry that happenned.
it is hard to keep fish alive in a new tank.
keep reading here. if you have an empty tank again. keep it empty! and you can start over.
For now, keep listenning to what the people here say and wewill try to get you and your fish past this hard part ok?
Like someone already said. dont worry about the PH 7.8 is fine.
use the other tests and tell us the results. someone will tell you what to do about them
you had a very good idea to post on this forum because the people at a fish store cant alwways tell you what you need to know but people here can.

Just out of curiosity why are you testing your PH and not your ammonia and nitrites and nitrates? Do you bother reading any of the threads about cycling?

1) Your tank hasn't cycled...it is like trying to live in a toxic wasteland.

2) You are testing for a water parameter that doesn't really matter at this point (ph)

3) Your tank is totally overstocked

All tap water has a pH level, and the level is different depending on where you live. My pH level from my tap is 7.0 You need to test 1st ammonia, this is very deadly if there is too much, and too much is a very small amount. 2nd test nitrites, this is also deadly to fish. 3rd is nitrates, this is ok to have a little but can kill fish if you get to much. Then theres the pH level. 7.8 is not too bad, fish will live ok in that if they get used to it. pH is very streesful to fish if it is always fluctuating. My pH in my tank is about 6.8. When I first set up my tank my pH was 7.8 for the longest time. Then I added a piece of driftwood and it went down to 6.8-7.0 I would suggest adding a piece of driftwood and then regular water changes, and your pH should stay around 7.0 which is ok for most fish. :dive2:

Not to mention that cycle looks and smells like pure water to me, i would return it if not opened. if opened then get get some aquarium pharm stress zyme and stress coat. The aquarium pharm products are excellant reasonably priced, and good quality. Others mention Prime, same product made by some one else. I prefer Aquarium Pharm others prefer Prime. Either way I hear good things. Just dont use the cycle, its total crap. In order to bring the ammonia down you will need to add the bacteria that breakdown the ammonia. Enter Stress zyme. It is impossible to over dose this stuff so be liberal. and stress coat will take care of the chlorine issues. good luck and remember we all have been in your position. But I agree, pH is more of a mute matter when ammonia will kill your fish faster than I can type this. But still good info for the mind

and no pleco, they will get 18+ inches plus they eat algea which you will have none of, so wait a month or two and then add one. I have personally watched my Petsmart sell a oscar to a guy that wanted a fish that would eat a feeder goldfish, for his TEN gallon, here is a fish that can be measured in feet for adult size in a tiny tiny tank, kinda like sure your german shepard puppy would fit in your mailbox but as an adult there is no way that would work or make sense

my ten gallon has two platys and a dwarf gourami, and a black molly. seems to be a nice blend for me but i cant vouch for you, but some thing like that may work since you already have a platy from your last post. the wag tail, or mickey mouse variety or the countless other color schemes.

And bubblers are good as they help stir up the water, aerrate, not totally vital but most fish love the bubbles to play in . If you want a quieter tank, consider paying more for the air pump, the rema are a nice brand, pricey but much more quiet, just my opinion

Tourtured....I'm thinking you haven't been reading much of this thread.....she is a newbie, was given very bad info at the store...and we all are trying to help her through it....so.....read up a bit before you post please.... ;)

well thank you all again i am down to 5 little fish and one small african dwarf frog my tiger died but the pet store told me all my levals where normal except my ph that is why i only bought the ph test kit i had to work all day todayand when i got out my LFS was closed hopefully i can get there tomorrow to get the other tests i need for the tank but i think it is levaling out with the 30 % water changes 2 times a day the fish seem to be happier and playing alot more with each other i really like the bubbles in my tank and my painted platy loves swimming in the bubbles i dont mind the noise to much isnt much louder then my geico's tank (which has no air tubes in it lol)im trying to talk my father into giving me his 55 gallon tank that only houses one gold fish in the winter month i told him i will trade him we will see how that goes but i know if he does give it to me not to switch my fish into it for at least a month thanks to you all and is my tank over stocked i read it is one inch of fish per gallon of water but my fish are all really small and i have been told they wont get much bigger then they are now (hopefully ) after reading on this site i have learned im not going to buy a pacu which i thought was a beautiful fish in the store and almost bought

oh yeah and i for got to say i am already putting stress coat in the water 5 drops per gallon everytime i change it it is made by aquarium pharm i did open the bottle of cycle but will look at petco to see if they have the stress zyme but how much should i put in a 10 gallon tank i would hate to just make my problem worse

Personally I have not had good experience with Stress Zyme at all... it did nothing to help my cycle and sent my nitrates sky high... this was not good....maybe it was me or the bottle I had was bad, but I am not going to use it again...For my second and third tank I just used Prime when changing water and added nothing else and it worked out quite well...

well i posted this on my other thread but im not sure everyone that has helped me here has read my other thread so i will post the results of my test strip here also
chlorine 0
nitrites were 0 but longer they sat on test strip it went to 0.5 hardness 120
ph was 7.6 but longer it sat on the test strip it also went up to 8.0
i bought stress zyme and some more water softener and some plasti plants for my lil babies to play in the tank is looking much better and the fish seem to be doing great in it hopefully these results will help me and let me know if i need to keep doing 2 water changes a day
