Oh, for Pete's sake! Don't you people see what he's/she's doing? They're procrastinating those poor Oscars to death.

Am I the only one that read that they were "a little tipsy" when they bought them? lol

For the love of Pete........stop drinking and find another hobby.

For the love of Pete? Who in the **** is Pete.... go find another phrase. My fish are babies and they are doing just fine....poor Oscars...nothing...poor you for showing some sympathy to fish that are well.

mzaltadena,

opinions .... everyone has one
that said I think many are concerned about 1. oscars in a small tank and 2. your tank is cycling.

first the oscars are babies and may appear to be fine now but it won't be long before they outgrow the tank you have..I raise angels and keep the babies overstocked in small tanks..but..I do frequent water changes(daily when growing them out) and do not plan on keeping the fish in tha small tanks for very long. so you can keep the oscars there for a short period..but unless you plan on getting a larger tank, you should really consider taking them back..sooner is better than later but mostly because you can get credit for them ;)
2. the tank is cycling and a fish that produces a high bioload, like the oscars, are not good in a small tank as the levels will spike sooner and will be harder to maintain.
now, if you are willing to do the water changes, and I mean often, then please proceed.

how are the ammonia levels??
you should do atleast a 50% change based on the last reading, recheck the ammonia and be prepared to so more changes until the levels drop to .25 max.

please feel free to continue asking questions..

no problem.

we all made similar mistakes .

make sure you try and keep the ammonia and nitrites at a max of .25 this will allow enough food for the bacteria without causing great distress to your fish.

don't be afraid to do large water changes..I have done 70 % changes with no ill effect to the fish and this was with discus. as long as you are using a water conditioner that removes or neutralizes chlorine and or chloramines you should be fine.

I saw some Oscars tonight at my LFS they were Massive so I can see what all the fuss is about they looked beautiful the store had them in a big looong tank which was good.

OK I TOOK THE OSCARS BACK.....but... I got some guppies, was that also a bad move? I have 2 females and 3 males.. LOL I also got a breeder net, just incase.... I did another water change my amonia is at .50 still, but I show some nitrate at 20 and nitrite at 0.5 is that good or bad?

when you see reading like this you need to change more water. I would do another 50%-70% change. then check the readings again..with the oscars out the readings may not climb as fast once you get them to .25(half of what you have)
your fish will appreciate it.

also take some tap water (souce??) and test it..
normally if you are showing nitrates you are getting things going. however, some water supply may show nitrates and could give the false impression or a cycle establishing.

If you dropped Guppies into a tank with a 0.5 reading of Ammonia, I'd be surprised if they all survive the night.

It's time to do another 75% water change.

OK well, they did last the night, and they are swiming around alot... I am currently at work, and plan on returning home later this evening to do another water change of 50-70%....
