Crayfish? Yes? or No?

On another forum, someone once started a thread asking "Wat launguage do u take at skool???"

My only reply was "Sometimes I wonder if kids today are even taking English...." I got a lot of positive responses.

I'm 20. I have never typed like an illiterate moron. I actually find it far more difficult to type like an illiterate moron than to type correctly.

Because its so much easier to type "ur" than "you're" or "your"

another one of my favorites is the run on yuo know no or few complete thoughts or pauses I don't get it no punctuation like their cmputer is borken and they don't even take the time to check for typeos by going back and rereading wut they typed so I just roll my eyes and it makes my heafd hurt ya know spomeome contact Vanna and see if we can arrange that they buy a period or a a comma and maybe the paitnce to back go and be sure that they wrote everything properly

Sorry guys, I didn't mean to offend anyone. I was simply saying that you can't really judge someone by the way they write. I'm french, and it p**** me off when I couldn't get a job because apparently, I didn't seem confident in the way I spoke, just because I spent a lot of time thinking of the proper english term. Doesn't mean I'm stupid though.

P.S. For the crayfish question, I'd stay away from them unless you want a crayfish tank. Too risky to keep with other fish.

. . .Edit---> Just wanted to clarify that I am a teen, because after re-reading my post, I sounded like an old man :D
No, you don't.

You sound like an intelligent person that has a lot to contribute to any discussion here.

I'm sorry. I started reading this thread because, once upon a time, I was interested in getting a crayfish for my tank. Unfortunately, this deteriorated into a "save the world through proper use of grammar" thread. That's really useful to those posting in a message board about aquaria.

TetraBotia, not that I'm defending the supposed "Troll" in this thread but, if you are going to place yourself on a pedestal and criticize someone for poor use of grammar and syntax then you'd better **** well make sure that what you write is absolutely flawless.

Yeah- well sorry to sound so snobby about it, but I was trying to make the point, that while it is ok to sometimes be willy nilly about grammar and syntax (and maybe even spelling), there are times to be a little more clear and professional, for lack of a better term.

I think you need to work on your use of punctuation. What you meant to say is: "Yeah. Well, sorry to sound so snobby about it but I was trying to make a point that, while it is ok to sometimes be willy nilly about grammar and syntax (and maybe even spelling), there are times when it is appropriate to be a little more clear and professional for lack of a better term.

When I see someone use something like "ur" and "prolly" and "ppls" and "wut", over and over, I begin to wonder if it is the kids fault or our schools fault...

Well, while you were riding your high horse, you forgot to place apostrophes in "kid's" and "school's" to imply that these words are being used as possesive nouns.

TetraBotia said:
but certainly someone has to tell this or these kids that, while being "cool" might be fun for a while, getting a job and making a living is ultimately far more important.

In any paper this statement, along with its other half above, would be considered a run-on sentence resulting in points deducted.

TetraBotia said:
the only people I know that are illiterate and still trying to put being "cool" first are criminals and drug addicts.

Sooooooooooooo, because this kid used a method of typing that might be accepted by his peers at his/her age group, he/she is now illiterate and is going to grow up to be a drug addict or a criminal which, by the way, can be considered one in the same. Oh, and by the way, in your original posting, you used two periods at the end of the sentence prior to the one quoted and you forgot to capitalize the "T" in "the."

TetraBotia said:
So wise up kid... whether you like it or not the world does pass judegement on you based on the way you present yourself, and some of those people who will be passing judegment will have the keys to doors of success for you... Utilize written language or attitude like "wut" and "ppls" and "srry" and the only keys given to you will be limited to McDonalds, or some back breaking factory.

So, let's see............you know everything about grammar and syntax and you can now predict the future of a kid about whom you know nothing other than the fact that he/she uses a way of communicating on an informal message board that you don't like......................in my opinion....you need to get laid, and soon.

I'm not even going to proof-read this post because I KNOW that I'm not perfect and I don't ever plan on telling anyone how to live their lives, let alone how I feel they should communicate with me. You need to get a grip and realize that this is a forum about aquaria (did you notice the URL?). If you don't like what someone has to say or they way they say it, ignore it (yes, I realize that I'm not following my own advice right now). It's people like you that make places like this so utterly worthless to people at times.

That being said, I'm not even going to read the rest of this read because I'm sure it just continues to degenerate into some kind way off-topic discussion about grammar and the woes of society. If that's the case, I can only hope that the moderator decides to lock this thread so he/she can help maintain the integrity and original purpose of this site.

I was not asking anyone to be flawless... I was pointing out that intentionally presenting oneself in a flawed manner might just backfire.

As to my errors, thanks for the tips. Mine were unintentional.

I would bet the union of you and the poster might yield some more positive results concerning his (or her) punctuation, grammar, and spelling. If not, I hope he (or she) and his ilk wind up populating your neighborhood.

:D

I sure hope our instructors in the schools are not defending such performance or the criticism of same... If you are an instructor in English perhaps you should present your thesis on this subject to your Superintendent or Principal.

Now as to that crayfish, if you have any questions, why don't ya give it a whirl? I am sure someone here would be willing to help you.

I highly doubt this kid presents him/herself in this way when writing papers. If that was the case, I highly doubt that he/she would even be capable of reading this message board, let alone responding to a post.

From this kid's point of view, he/she didn't make any errors. That's the way he/she chose to type. You didn't like it. Oh well. Deal with it, just not on this message board. We're talking about aquaria here, not grammar. At the very least take this garbage over to the water cooler section where it belongs.

They already have......they're called kids. I hate to alarm you but, they're everywhere. They may even live in your household....LOOK OUT!!!! Kids do a lot of things that "adults" don't like or approve of. That's part of being a kid. Harping on one of them for being themselves isn't going to change anything.

Well, for starters, why the hell would I ask you about them? It seems you'd be more interested in attacking the grammar of a poster to make yourself feel more important as opposed to actually answering a question. I'm not even sure why you continued to badger the kid in the first place. Did the thought that someone might not follow your advice actually hurt your ego so much that you had to find something completely unrelated to the topic to assault him/her over? Secondly, I've already done the necessary research to know that adding a crayfish to a community tank is generally a bad idea (thanks again to those whe responded to my crayfish question in the past).

Like I've said before pal, you need to get a grip. The kid wasn't impressed with your advice. Let it go. Move on. I know I am. This thread is a waste of time. I'm amazed I've spent as much time on it as I have.
