Crayola sand

But hey, if you want a brightly colored tank, this may not be a bad option for you. ;)

I'm not really a fan of unnatural colored tanks, but glofish are kinda unnatural colored fish. Very beautiful unnatural colored fish at that IMO. As I said, I'm just going to use this Crayola sand for a 20g glofish tank.

it still cost less here than buying aquarium sand from the lps. my lps sells if for $1.50/lbs..walmart has theirs for $6 for 20lbs. that's not that much. it's more than playsand but it's worth it if you want to add the color. i have already added playsand to my 2 largest tanks and i don't want them all to look the same. it should not be too bad for smaller tanks. besides, it will be fun to experiment a little and have my tank being something a bit different than everyone else's. (:

How much is it anyway? I have to agree even though I don't know the price. We are putting together our 120g one piece (more like one dollar) at a time. The black aquarium sand we are getting is $18 for a 20 lb bag. Crayola has to be cheaper than that.

if your going for glofish than your best bet would be to use black gravel, like jim said maybe in later in the future something will go wrong.

for sure it will be. i like the black moonsand too though, i just don't want to spend that much. it is way overpriced here, imo. i think it would be cool to have bright sand in my tank with the blue yabbie to help set off his blue.

also, i don't even think it says not for aquarium use on the package. i will check though. i'm not going to get it until at least the 20th(next pay day) playsand says not to put it into aquariums too but it's just cause you need to rinse the fine particles out. anyways, we will never know how safe it is or isn't if no one ever tries it so just relax people. i'm not going to put it in my show tank or anything(nor would i want to). the only thing the company said is that it doesn't have any toxic ingredients. i don't think it will be any different than adding colored gravel. it is probably made the same way. they have a way of bonding the acrylic to the (quartz)sand so that it is water proof.

sorry. i'm not trying to be cranky, although it is past my bedtime... i think that other people might find the information useful once the tank is up and running with the coloured sand in it for a while and i am looking at it in a scientific view.

if it says its not safe for aquarium use, then dont use it.

still, the sand could still leech chemicals into the water 6 months or a year from now.

we'll find out.

if i wanted to use black gravel that's exactly what I would do. However, like I said, I like the purple sand. Not much a comparison between the 2. I have black gravel already in one of my tanks, i'm going with the black aquarium snad in another and I don't want my tanks to be the same. I think the colored play sand will look nice.

Not much info on the web. I learned that the colored sand is not actually made by Crayola, but is made by N2M Group. No info about the make up of the sand or additives. Or if it is or is not aquarium safe. i sent an email to the manufacturer and asked. Maybe I'll get lucky and they'll actually respond sometime this week.

I did find out that this sand is suppose to help obesity in kids. Maybe it will keep our fish slim. That's a plus right?

Here's the contact info if anyone wants to contact them yourself.

Here's a link to contact Crayola.

I have the seachem black sand in my tank. It looks amazing but yes its WAY over priced. 24 dollars for a 18lbs bag. The only good thing was there were holes in my bags so i got them for 20 each. Rinsing the sand was a pain to. I cant wait to see how your tank turns out. Having colored sands would be exciting. Until the price gets up'd because aquarium owners want it lol. Keep us informed

Oh yeah. i forgot to add. The SRP is $7.99 per 20 lb bag.

Good point. we better keep this on the DL.
