This boggles my mind. There are more starts in the universe than grains of sand on earth. As a matter of fact, according to scientists current estimates there are around 100 stars for every grain of sand. :jaw:

That's awesome! I had an astronomy friend once tell me that there are so many stars that if you could jumpt to the farthest, dimmest star you could see, and continued doing that, eventually you would see the back of your head. (Has something to do with the space/time continuum theory. Like the theory that if there was a Santa Clause, the speed needed to accomplish the monumental task would actually make him younger.)

I know you meant stars and yeah , I heard that and it is unbelievable isn't it ? How to comprehend that is just beyond me but it is so awesome I can't stand it :)

Oh , and stars are suns and suns have planets so add that up !!!!!!!

now that you have that in your head... check this out. The universe is so thinly dispersed it can be compared to a 20 mile high 20 mile wide and 20 mile long room with 1 grain of sand in it. That grain of sand would be planets start etc.

I think he was talking about reaching the edge of the universe as in theory if you go off the "deep end" on the universe you start on the other side again. This however will never happen as going to the farthest star would be 13,000,000,000 light years away and each light year is 9,500,000,000,000 kilometers long. =p

I have no idea what he meant but regardless, it is just too vast to comprehend! I cannot conceive of your grain of sand in that room :D! I have to admit that I do try to envision the "edge" of it and yet scientists say it is still expanding. So will the Haldron Collider create the black hole that will suck us all in, when and if it ever fires up?

when you think about that stuff you get that "brain opening" feeling. some of the newer theorys suggest that our universe is just one of countless, evergrowing universes in other dimentions, and our own universe was formed by two other universes clashing together

The LHC will not create a black hole. All renown physicists agree that the LHC is perfectly safe in that regard. Even if it does (which it wont), the black hole would most likely be microscopic and never harm anything.

I think the theory behind the collider being able to rip open the continuum is a bunch of **** if you ask me. The most it would be able to do IMHO is set off a nuclear detenation ripping a whole in the earth not space and time.
