My cycle completed a while ago but my nitrites are still maxed out. I have just started doing water changes. 2 days ago i did a 30% change, following day nitrites still at 5. I am using RO water, no nitrites in this water. I waited 2 days and today did another 30% water change. Nitrite levels still identical and maxed out. I added a load of "cycle" which contains nitrifying bacteria. I am hoping the bacteria kicks in and starts sopping up my nitrites. All other readings are perfect. What else can I do? In 2 more days another 30% change if nothing improves? How long will the bacteria supplement take to work -if it works? Thanks!!

I would hold off putting any additives in to the tank untill the cause of the nitrite is found. Are you running a UV on this tank? If you are, this can cause nitrite to be produced as a UV light by breaking up nitrates which produce nitrites through photolysis.

It would help if you could post a full list of your parameters for reference purposes..

Do you mean a UV filter or UV lighting? It's just an Aquaone ar-620 tank and I'm using the lights that came with it. The shop has several of these established marine environments.I already added the addative after the waterchange it was "Nutrafin Cycle" by Hagen. "cycle releases massive amounts of beneficial bacteria into the aquarium. Each dose works to reduce dangerous ammonia and nitrite levels." "cycle is an all-natural product that will not harm plants, animals or humans. It is impossible to overdose." "For fresh or saltwater".

When you say parameters are we talking tank, water tests or both? I'll get as much info as i can tomorrow. Here is a current pic:

It has the appearance that some of the rock is dyed, but some of it is grass like and slimy i suppose:

If it was me, as the tank is in the early stages, i would take each rock out and scrub all that green off with a nail brush in some saltwater, get it cleaned up a little..

do you think that stuff could be causing nitrites as well? I was hoping some sort of cleaning crew would get rid of it but i may be out of luck in that regard (if not what animals would remove it?). If it is something that will eventually go away i don't mind leaving it (my free time is scarce at the moment). if it is something that will get worse i guess i'll try to find time to scrub it.

It wont be the cause of your nitrites no as algae mainly absorbs nutrients to grow...I think that if left unchecked or the source to the algae is not found, it wil only get worst...A clean up will certainly help to battle this for you..

Ok, so i did a 30% change yesterday, this morning nitrites are still maxed out. I will scrub the rocks today but what should I do next about the nitrites? Am I wasting time with doing water changes? If I need to do another water change when should I do it and how much water? Thanks!
