So some of you know that I adopted a cat about a month ago. When I was fostering her she was sweet as a pea and wasn't picky with her food and was an all around great cat.

Then she was given to me as a birthday present. I swear it was if she knew she was in the green zone and she turned into the biggest diva ever. I know I spoil her so much which could be part of the reason why she turned into such a snot face but that's not the reason I'm writing this.

After I adopted her she started to become really picky on food where as when she was a foster she would eat anything. She likes her meow mix seafood meadly dry cat food just fine, tried to feed her some generic that someone gave me and she wouldn't eat it so I gave it to the feral cats I take care of and they scarfed it right up. As far as canned cat food goes, she used to eat it all, whatever I bought her she ate and now she had two things that she would eat. Tuna fish(for human consumption) and friskies classic pate. Oh and of course she ate fancy feast but I hated buying it because it was $.10 more then the other brands and a whole lot less.

Well anyways I was searching on CL and I came across this ad. This guy had to close down his health food pet store and had to liquidate all is canned cat food. Some of the brands being weruva, precise, and tiki cat. I did a google search on all three brands because I hadn't seen them on store shelves. Well no duh for me, talk about high end quality very expensive cat food. The precise cat food was $2 a can online and the other brands mentioned were around that too. I started reading the reviews that people gave and they sounded really good. The only thing bad people said about the various brands was that the price was so high but it was worth it because even their most picky cats would eat it. That sold me, I emailed the guy and asked for a price and he told me $12 for a case($.50) but if I bought more then two cases I could have them for $10 a case(24 cans).

I felt like I had hit the jackpot, If I can spend the same amount for high quality cat food that has real meat in it that even the pickiest cats would eat I was in heaven. I went to buy four cases and came home with six which ran me $60 but I didn't care I was so excited. Got home, opened up a can of weruva, beef and potatoes, and I swear to you it looked like someone slow cooked a roast and put in the can with peas and potatoes. It did not look like animal food in the least. I spooned some in chances bowl, she licked it maybe three times and then walked away. I was like oh the f*ck no. So then I'm like okay well when she gets hungry enough she'll eat it. But I couldn't take the waiting, I had to open a different can. This time I opened a tiki cat, tuna fish with prawns. For sure she had to like this right? She goes through so much tuna fish it's not funny so surely she'll love this. Opened it up, there was a couple of small prawns sitting right on the top. Spooned some in chances dish she took one sniff and ran.

I'm just so frustrated. I have a huge box of 148 cans of cat food sitting in my dining room, two opened cans in the fridge and a cat sitting at my feet meowing because she's hungry. She finished off the rest of her dry food and I know she wants more or better yet for me to open a can of tuna. I think I'm going to leave the food there for a night and maybe if she gets really hungry she'll eat it. I'm so tempted to toss the opened stuff out to the ferals because I know they'd scarf anything up in a heart beat, all they care about is being fed but I bought this food for Chance. Chance is my one tame cat, she's my baby girl and I want her to eat the best but she's not cooperating. Any suggestions?:help2:This situation reminds me why I'm a dog person.

My cat didn't like the Weruva, either, although it looked like something I would have for lunch. Don't feel bad about the food. Put it back on CL. There are plenty of people who would probably be willing to buy it.

Cats are just like that. Mine is on a prescription diet for bladder stones, and let me tell you, it can get expensive very quickly. Sometimes it takes a little while with new foods and cats. He may not have liked one flavor of a food, but really liked another.

Feed what you like, but if you can find a wet food she likes, you may end up saving vet bills down the road. Wish I had known that before. Good luck. I do feel your pain, though.

My cats won't eat high dollar wet either. I even started them on it young but I think it upsets their stomach. Finally landed on Friskies and they love it.

They do get a high meat content dry food though, Blue Wilderness, they love.

sucks to say this, but i think you wasted your money. Most cats are fine with lower class foods. Mine like the cheapest stuff possible, cause thats all they get. The thing about cats is that once they get used to something, they prefer to stick with it, even if something better comes along. Like my cat Stripes, he used to get wet food, but we converted him to dry food (took a long time to do that...) and then when we decided to treat him to wet food he wouldn't touch it. Just stick with dry food or basic wet food, saves money and time, IMO.

I think that a person generally tries to afford the best food possible for pets. Most owners are well intentioned that way. In my situation, I have little question that feeding exclusively dry food resulted in an obscenely high veterinary bill and could have cost my cat his life.

The problem wasn't necessarily that the dry food was bad; it just had long term repercussions on his health. It was decent quality dry food, and ended up costing us dearly in the long run. It's very hard to know what to feed, but I can say with some certainty-- unless there is no other choice, cheaper on the front end may result in much more expense on the long end-- especially if your cat is prone to urinary tract issues. I found that by feeding urinary tract formulas exclusively, I ended up causing the problem I was trying to avoid.

The other side of the coin, as my vet pointed out, is that nutrition isn't nutrition until it is consumed. You can have the best diet in the world, but if the cat won't eat it, it's useless.

:iagree: now go tell my dad that... and my cats. Snowy and Stripes refused to eat wet food last time we tried to give it to them. Skippy(Skipper) and Middy(Midnight) complain because we don't give them enuff. Enuff meaning as much as they can fit in their bellies and then some.

They need to make a food that tastes and smells like cat butt. Stupid felines seem to love the taste of that.

Try not feeding her at all for a couple days, then give her some of the new food...

I have 3 foster kittens right now and they are my first experience with cats. I brought home the exact same stuff they were eating at the shelter but they refused to eat it at first. They would walk over to the dish, sniff it , then act like they were going to throw up :irked:

The key I found to get them to et was to mix in a few dry kibbles in with the wet and microwave the food. Now they eat it.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I would have never paid retail for these brands but because they were being liquidated it only cost me the same as if I were to buy the cheap crap food. And with the great reviews all the brands had I thought for sure Chance would like it. I still have a lot of flavors to try on her but I'm going to try my hardest to get her to eat this stuff cause I didn't buy it for the ferals, I love my feral cats but Chance is my baby.

I tossed the food I gave her to the ferals so that it doesn't go to waste and then scooped some fresh stuff out of the cans that are in the fridge and mix it with some kibble and heated it. I know she's hungry but she took one sniff and walked away. She keeps peeking out of the bathroom to see if I'm coming to feed her. I tried pouring in tuna juice and she drank the tuna juice. I opened a can of precise which looked like thr ground crap she's used to eating and she won't eat that.
