Dead clown, maybe Ich HELP!

ok sounds good I just did a 50% water change, this is just a freaking mess! now how do I ensure the ich is dead in my tank since I messed up the dosing... I guess if most if the fish are dead the ich is probably dead also?
-Also since I got all the fish at once pretty much I dident have Q tank set up, ill set one up tonight but will it be ready for the buffalo in 4 days? Should I get more biospira and dump it in the Q tank? this sucks thanks a lot for the guiding light.. :bowing:
PS: If my buffalo makes it through this, if there anything I can give him to help him with the stress and effects of this? prehaps I medacation or somthing I can buy to help him out?

this kind of stuff happens very often to newer hobbyists...
i know that everyone wants the best for their pets, however you always have to remember that haste can sometimes cause more troubles than are already present.
If something like this should happen again, in my opinion the salt is great, but if you follow the directions on a commercial product you will almost always be better off...they have the resources and the research to back it all up.
remember too that increasing the temp too quickly can cause more stress.
I generally use a saltwater bath outside of the tank, in a higher consentrationfor only five minutes at a time.
Also in my experience, not to throw any brand loyalty out there.... but mardel products seem to work very well for me.
They have something called Maricide that works well for scaled AND skinned types of fish.
I use Maroxy alot too when needed.
I have Irridescent sharks and several Loaches that seem to do well by these products.
Salt is not very expensive, you can even get it at Walmart if its late in the evening.
Raising the temp increases the fishs metabolism... so if you by chance are too aggressive with treatment, or use the wrong treatment, youll have less time to correct yourself.
Good Luck

Sure, if you have the means, or even some on hand, BIO-Spira would be excellent to get the Q-tank running. Remember, 20 teaspoons for the Q-tank to continue treatment on the buffalo. Since you never saw a spot, just consider how many days you have treated him, plus his time in QT. After a week with "no spot" consider him clean, start doing normal water changes on the Q-tank.

Ich has to have a host to survice. That is why I suggest treating the main tank like a fishless cycle by dosing ammonia to 5 ppm everyday for a while. You can check the tests to make sure your bacteria are handling the ammonia properly as well as kill the Ich because there is enough salinity in there plus no host.

As for using meds vs. using salt for Ich, I don't think misreading the dosing directions on either one would have been very healthy for the fish involved. And, as meds are usually much more harsh on the fish as is salt at proper levels, I'll stick with the salt for my Ich treatment, if ever I should have it in the future. Let's keep our fingers crossed on that one. ;)

This is really innacurate advice in several ways. Firstly the salt method has been proven effective many many times over, both in home tanks and in scientific labs, with multile reproduced experiments, and peer review. Meds, are effective, but contain variables that can effect their ability to work and as said cause much more stress on most fish, and especially on the loaches in question. As far as research and resources, I have yet to see one of these companies garantee their product, so the resources don't mean much when they don't cure your ich, or when they kill your fish either. Their resources fall far more into the marketing category than into research or product developement.

I do hope you realize that this will not have any effect on ich whatsoever, and in the case of a fish with sub-clinical infetion of ich, it may serve as the stress factor that allows a full bore outbreak. High concentration short term Salt baths only work un unprotected external parasites, ich is highly protected, as are many of the external nasties in a freshwater tank.

HeinekenMike I am truly sorry that this came down the way it did, keep working at it and learning. There is nothing I feel needs to be added to Harlocks advice at this point. The bacteria may or may not have survived, I would personally keep the q-tank ready, and test the main tank for ammonia frequently. If none shows up, I'd leave things as they are and finish out the ich treatment in the main tank with the fish in place, if the ammonia shows then have things ready to to protect your fish. Absolutely you will want to keep the treatment up for at least a week after the last sign of ich. Good luck.

thanks Dave, and everyone else. I will try to learn from this as much as possible and never make the same unfortuneate mistake again
