At the Bottom, gilling rapidly.
I've been breeding some local stream shrimps. Wanting to maximize numbers I needed a prefilter to keep babies in the tank. Here's the DIY prefilter I've made for use with an Aquaclear 70 on my 30g and 40g tanks. It would work with any filter that uses two intake tubes like this.

1. First you get yourself a fancy square itoen tea bottle sans label

2. Cut out panels like leaving a sturdy structure. I left the back solid.
3. Cut off the foot of some stealth grey sheer elegance aw yeah baby!!!
4. Stick one intake tube in the bottle, tip to the nip.

5. Stretch the nylon as you fit it to open the weave up and trim excess.
6. Position the end of the material into the opening of the first tube. OK!
7. Stick the 2nd tube into the first, trapping the material between.

The bottle is now held onto the assembly by the tension of the nylon.

Here it is installed on the AC70 in a 40g (36x12 x21h)
Not too bad of an eyesore for freeninetynine.

I had previously rubber banded a stocking toe over the normal intake but it would become clogged within a few hours. With the surface area afforded by this huge prefilter box, I can go an entire week and clean with my normal maintenance. More cutouts can be made, I did not use all the available shape to full advantage.

Wow--that's pretty cool. And your plants are looking nice, too.

Looks good but wouldn't just wrapping the hose or filter media bag aroung the intake do the same?

This method increases the surface area of the nylon fabric while stretching it "open" more. All said it increases performance like 20x+ over no box. Just about anything would work but I liked this bottle for repurposing because it is square, sturdy and exactly the right size.

Very nice.

great idea i was trying to think of a way to keep the material away from the intake also it help it last longer, i have my rams and thing getting stick in the openings of the filter, lol a sponge over it just cloggs too fast,.lol

is that a sticker saying that you should not put a small child in the tank?

:evil_lol:

It must be about, Not closing the lid. Because that would force its nose to go below the water line.

They should replace the kid with oscars, goldfish, pacus, etc. though.
