I have a 55G tank thats fairly heavy planted. I don't have the money (I'm a senior in high school). Is it a must have for your plants to grow and not die? Could I just add ferts into the tank? And the other main question I have is how many times a week do I add ferts to the tank? Do I add the recommonded dose everyday....if thats the case I would probably run out every 3 days. I just need some help because I don't want my plants to die. Any help would be awesome, thanks

what if you have this?

Hagen Plant Grow Natural System with CO2. This you can get at petsmart.

Self-contained system generates the CO2 needed for aquatic plants to perform photosynthesis. System includes a fermentation canister, bubble diffuser and 90 days' worth of activator and stabilizer. Simply add water and regular table sugar (not included) to begin the process.

Would this work for C02?

Wait a minute. You have a 55 gal tank that is heavily planted. How did it get that way? Did you grow the plants? Or did you just put them in the tank recently?

co2 helps keep plants green and growing.. but dont forget about the firtilizers

Whether you need to inject CO2 depends on your light level, the higher the light level the more critical CO2 becomes. For a 55g tank you may not need CO2 unless you have over 100w of light, over that and CO2 becomes a big factor.

to answer ur question it's both yes and no. if u have slow growing low light plants u dont need c02 or alot of light, they will stay alive but will not thrive.

now if u have good lighting with no c02 or ferts u will have an algae problem. if u have good lighting, ferts, but no c02 u might have an algae problem. if u have good lighting, c02, but no ferts u might have an algae problem.
i hope u see where im goin with this.

c02, lighting, and ferts all provide the essential plants need to grow and thrieve. if u dose ferts but not c02 the plants wont be takin advantage of all the nutrients and will leave excess, this excess will be left for the algae and then the algae will start to out compete the plants.

ive hopefull explained the need for c02 but im sure i over simplified everything and missed a couple key points.
read this article: http://www.rexgrigg.com/
lot of good info on the site, explains in better detail why ur actually injecting c02 and ferts.

p.s. phanmc congrats on ur 1k post

can you give a list of low light plants so I can go a get some. Thanks

Heres a couple I have that petsmart sells;

Cillata
Lutea.

They should have tags explaining the light requirements and whether it is a true aquatic.
