Dog Skull Maceration OR Another Disturbing Project by Bio [WARNING: GRAPHIC PICS!!!]

Good luck with the skull.. !!

I attempted this once with a bat skull I found on an adventure on the woods.. but sadly, I tried the boiling method. Stupidly, I used a coated pot.. after several hours of boiling, I had a sickly grey soupy teflon & rotten flesh mess, a still flesh-covered skull, and an apartment that reaked like a morgue, so I had to abandon it. Sad too, the bat skull was a cool find..

I did not know aobut the method you are doing, so best of luck! =)

Bats are difficult due to their small size. I have used maceration on them 3 times. 2 times were successful, but one of them the skull disarticulated. It can be hit or miss with small specimens.

Week 2

Mmmm, bacterial soup. It is getting warm, and the bacteria have started colonizing the water, as you can see. You know that cloudy water yopu got the first time you cycled your aquarium? Same idea. Except in this case, it stays pretty cloudy. The different bacteria will do different things, and some will float around and feed off the byproducts of others.
Not much of an odor yet. Even when I sniffed right over the bucket, I couldn't smell much at all. That should change as decomposition picks up.

Well, its been around three months. I haven't really checked in on it much, as I am not exactly doing the work here. I did decide to do a water change on it today, to help promote bacterial growth. Looks like I already have a lot!!! I don't know for sure, but that crazy blood red color immediately makes me think Serratia bacteria. Pretty crazy looking! I didn't really mess with the skull this time, as I know it isn't done yet. This heat wave should really be helping it along though.

Just opened...

Dumped most of the water, but left enough to establish the bacteria again. Look at those red walls!

Very interesting bananner! Is he almost done cookin?

I hope so. Seems like we had a slow start to the summer, and heat really drives this. I could put a aquarium heater in, but I would never want to use it on anything else. Luckily it is nice and HOT now. I am hoping he will be done by the end of the summer. If not, I might bury him until next summer.

could only guess what that must have smelled like...

Glad we dont have Smellevision!

Actually, the maggoty starling by the shed smells a LOT worse. I don't know why, but this has almost no odor, and I am honestly not sure what to make of that. I was expecting epic stank!

Cool, i think i threw up in my mouth a little with the last pics... but cool. I'll be keeping up even i i can't hold down my lunch when i see those pics. Not a good stomach for smells so halalua to the no smellivision yet.
