Raon-try getting a syphon started when you run outta gas. Much tastier than fish water :D
Been there, done that :)

But, I do think it tastes better than tank water ;)

I would NEVER start a syphon by sucking - yuck.

USING A SIPHON 101
1 - Lower the whole thing in the tank, so it fills with water, with no air bubbles - including the wide 'vac' part and the tube
2 - Put your thumb over the tube end
3 - Bring the tube end out of the tank, still with your thumb over it, and put it in the empty bucket (the bucket must be lower than the tank)
4 - Let go with your thumb

HINTS:
- the lower you put the bucket, in comparison to the tank, the faster the water will siphon (and the more suction you'll get while you're vacuuming)
- the only reason you have to suck, when you're getting gas out of your car is because you can't dunk the whole tube in

I used to just suck on the end of mine, but that got anoying along with the carrying of buckets back and forth from tank to bathroom ect.

SOO I bot myself a Python and everything is MUCH easyer now, dealing with more then one tank on water change day is still less work then doing the manual way with one tank!

Yeah thats what I do. Why would you suck on it....

My gravel vac has a one way valve in it.All i have to do is shake it up and down to get a siphon started,it is a Top Fin gravel vac from Petsmart.

What you can do is take the syphon over to your sink and run water through it, plug up the end of the airline tube with your finger.....dump the water from the "vac" end and with your finger still plugging up the tube end...fill the "vac" in your tank and let the tube end go in your bucket.

Once the airline part is full of water all you have to do is fill the larger end in your tank.....(so that tap water doesn't get into your tank).....give that a try.

Its more about the height of the siphon hose opening to the top of the water level in the tank. Sorry to be picky, its just one of my things.
lol. True - but I hated Fluid Mechanics at University, so I didn't want to start going into the details of differential pressures! :)
